How to make it

  • In a medium saucepan, over low heat, melt buter and chocolate.
  • Add sugar and vanilla, stir until blended.
  • Remove from heat, add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition until well blended.
  • Stir together flour, cream of tartar and baking soda.
  • Add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture.
  • Stir in nuts, if using.
  • Bake in waffle iron according to manufacturer's directions.
  • Carefully remove waffle from iron.
  • ***When you first remove the waffle it will be soft, but it will become crisp as it cools***
  • Serve warm with topping of choice.
  • Makes about 12 5-inch waffles.

    That would make a nice change for dessert - doesn't sound as heavy and rich...and it would make a colorful presentation with the whipped cream and sliced fruit topping. Waffles freeze so well and re-heat in the toaster great, so this would be a nice "make-ahead" dessert, too - love the idea, jaie!
