Great Great Grammas Empire Cookies Recipe
This cookie recipe has been handed down from my Great Great Grandma who would bake huge batches of these and then sell them from a large jar on her front step!

Ingredients
  • 1 c butter
  • 1/2 c brown sugar
  • 1/2 c white sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 egg
  • 3 c all-purpose flour

Directions
  1. Cream together butter and sugars.
  2. Add egg and blend.
  3. Combine flour, cream of tartar, and baking soda then stir into sugar mixture.
  4. For into a shaggy dough ball and turn out onto counter and knead for about 5 minutes or until dough comes together.
  5. Roll and cut desired shapes then bake in a 350 oven for 10 minutes or untilo golden brown.
  6. Cool on racks.
  7. Great Great Gramma's instructions when she wrote out this recipe said simply: "Mix it all together and knead it if you have time." :)

These sound very much like the "Empire" part of "Empire Biscuits" that we get in Scotland (sandwhich two [round, flat] cookies with raspberry jelly, and top with a simple icing glaze) Thank you for the post!


These sound familiar to me as well with the raspberry jelly and simple icing glaze.
