How to make it

  • Cream together butter and sugars.
  • Add egg and blend.
  • Combine flour, cream of tartar, and baking soda then stir into sugar mixture.
  • For into a shaggy dough ball and turn out onto counter and knead for about 5 minutes or until dough comes together.
  • Roll and cut desired shapes then bake in a 350 oven for 10 minutes or untilo golden brown.
  • Cool on racks.
  • Great Great Gramma's instructions when she wrote out this recipe said simply: "Mix it all together and knead it if you have time." :)

    These sound very much like the "Empire" part of "Empire Biscuits" that we get in Scotland (sandwhich two [round, flat] cookies with raspberry jelly, and top with a simple icing glaze) Thank you for the post!
