Sauerbraten Hamburger Recipe
Circa 1968 again...we have ALWAYS been looking for a way to make hamburger different.

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 Tbl minced onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 C fine bread crumbs
  • 1/3 C milk
  • 1/2 tsp lemon rind
  • 1 Tbl butter
  • 1 can beef gravy
  • 2 Tbl wine vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 firmly packed brown sugar
  • dash of ground cloves
  • 1 Bay leaf

Directions
  1. Mix first 7 ingredients lightly and shape into six large patties
  2. Brown on both sides in butter in skillet
  3. Remove patties and pour off fat
  4. Mix remaining ingredients in skillet and bring to a boil
  5. Add patties, cover and simmer about 30 minutes, turning and basting with the sauce
  6. If you wish, make smaller patties to serve more people but cut down cooking time accordingly
