Southern Fried Okra Recipe
Another of my favorite dishes (at my weight, they are all my favorite!) from the old south cookin'....FRIED OKRA

Ingredients
  • 1 pound fresh okra
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Directions
  1. Wash and slice okra; pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Combine eggs and buttermilk; add okra, and let stand for 15 minutes.
  3. Combine flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt and pepper.
  4. Drain okra, small portions at a time, using a slotted spoon.
  5. Dredge okra, small portions at a time, in flour mixture.
  6. Pour oil to depth of 2 to 3-inches in a Dutch oven or deep-fat fryer and heat to 375.
  7. Fry okra until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and serve immediately.

Okay, you keep posting all these wonderful southern dishes that I like, when is dinner???


Southerners eat Dinner at mid-day. We have Supper in the evening! Lunch is something that gets stuffed in a bag or in a "Lunch Box" for those times when ya can't get to the table for Dinner.....

Love fried okrie!!!!!! Used to grow in my garden in Alabama. It ate me up picking and cutting up. Then had to get the cornmeal and scrub hands, arms and face with it to quit the stinging!!!!!!! Now just buy frozen for my gumbo.


I could eat this everyday. It's southern fried okra at its best - thank you so much!
