St Patrickss Day Irish Soda Bread

- 2 cups all purpose flour shopping list
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon salt shopping list
- 1 tablespoon sugar shopping list
- 6 tablespoons chilled solid vegetable shortening shopping list
- 1 cup seedless dark raisins shopping list
- 1 tablespoon caraway seeds shopping list
- 3/4 cup buttermilk shopping list
How to make it
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, soda, salt and sugar.
- Cut shortening into flour mixture with pastry blender until coarse crumbs form.
- Lightly stir in raisins and caraway seeds.
- Add buttermilk; toss with fork until dry ingredients are just evenly moistened.
- Knead dough 3 or 4 times; shape into round loaf.
- Place on lightly greased baking sheet.
- Brush top with additional milk.
- Cut *x* in top with sharp knife.
- Bake in preheated 375 degree oven 45 to 50 minutes or until golden brown and crusty.
- Cool bread on wire rack.
- Store, tightly wrapped at room temperature.
- Yield: 1 loaf.
