How to make it

  • Cut enough meat for your family, into small pieces. Brown in a small amount of olive oil.
  • In slow cooker, mix 2 packets of brown gravy mix with 4 cups water.
  • Add one can mushrooms pieces (including water)
  • Add browned deer meat.
  • Slow cook on low, all day.
  • Serve over rice.

    I like deer. If you soak it in whole milk for about an hour before you start the recipe it tastes a whole lot less gamy. My Mom taught me that.

    I'm not a hunter, but three days ago a deer dog wandered up on our property (which has a lot of deer) and we got the owner's name from the collar. The man came and got her and brought about 10 pounds of deer meat. So, we're having deer stew tonight. I'm going to brown it off, add stock and seasonings and then when the meat gets tender add turnip roots, potatoes, carrots, celery, okra, mushrooms and a little red wine. Top with green onion tops and parsley. Serve over rice, probably or I may do dumplings on the side. Bambi stew.
