This a good and classic recipe, but it can be upgraded to casserole status by adding some diced ham or other meat and some chopped bells (red or green, or both, or pimentos) and celery. The soup can also change to cream of celery, for a variation and the cheese can also vary. Smoked Gouda is great.

I use cream of celery instead of the cream of chicken. I also add 1 cup of sour cream. It really is good that way.

also good is cream of mushroom soup and half a pound of cooked, drained bacon

I have had a recipe like this before. The only difference was we added cubed boneless chicken breast to it and used a blend of american, cheddar and colby jack cheese. When the casserole was almost done we sprinkle more cheese and bacon bits on top.
