I found this stuck in my old BHG cookbook from the 60's. It's an add-on page, not original. The following is from the recipe page.
Elegant four-layer pie wins fancy cook-of-the-month honors.

Yummmmmmm!!!!! I love old recipes! Thanks for submitting this. I like to get jars of Morello Cherries from Trader Joe's but never really know what to do with them. This is one is a keeper. When I make it, I'll be sure to take a picture. I don't think I've ever see a four layer pie before!

The picture that was with the recipe was rather old fashioned, not the fancy looking stuff they do now but it still looked interesting.
I guess you could make as many layers as you would like, if you really work at it!
I wish I had found a delicious crust for it also. The ones I have so far don't go with Black Forest or are just plain ones.
Let me know how it turns out for you!

This looks delicious. Sounds like a graham cracker crust would go better than pastry, or perhaps you could try puff pastry for lightness?
