These are so good if you love onions, which we do. These are good as either a side dish to a great grilled entree or as a main dish with a nice dinner salad. I love onions and the flavors in these are delightful. Hope you enjoy as much as we do.

Ingredients
  • 6 large cooking onions
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green pepper
  • 2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 slices American cheese
  • 8 ounce can tomato sauce

Directions
  1. Peel onions then cook in boiling salted water until tender yet firm.
  2. Drain and cool then slice off top third of each onion.
  3. Cut out centers to make cups.
  4. Chop 1/2 cup of the centers and sauté in oil with beef and green pepper for 5 minutes.
  5. Mix in breadcrumbs, chili powder, salt and pepper then fill onion cups with meat mixture.
  6. Place stuffed onions in shallow baking dish.
  7. Top each onion with strips of cheese.
  8. Pour tomato sauce over all and baste occasionally.
  9. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.
