This is "not" the Big Boy special sauce from Elias Brothers Big Boy in Michigan. Look in the ingredients list. It actually lists "steak sauce", and the following ingredients listed are that that resemble A1 very closely. Then at the end of the list, "hot sauce", which resemble that of a Franks Red Hot or Texas Pete sauce as the last ingredients. Elias Bros. Big Boy Sauce is very unique compared to all others.

In 1966-69 I was a high schooler doing prep work, and later line cook at a Kip's Big Boy in a not-to-be-named north Texas town.

I used to make the "secret sauce" a couple of times a week or more. I don't recall everything that was in it ---

In an empty 5 gallon bucket I would pour some mayo, some milk or buttermilk (can't recall which), one #10 can of Chili Sauce (Heinz?), some relish, maybe some spices but don't recall that. Certainly no garlic was in it, nor was there horseradish or onions. And I don't think a separate amount of ketchup was in it either. The Chili sauce is largely a vinegary ketchup anyway.

Used a wooden paddle to stir, and we had just under 5 gallons in each batch. We had to make batches roughly every 3-4 days. Maybe more on weekends.

I slathered that sauce on literally thousands of Big Boys. Wish I could recall it more specifically.

Do you happen to know the recipe for Big Boy's Garlic and Oil dressing from their salad bar? Been looking everywhere and no one seems to have it.
This secret sauce recipe is the best I've found. Thanks!

Back in the day when I had a Big Boy restaurant near me (called Shoney's Big Boy in my hometown), this sauce was good. I'll be trying it again and traipsing down memory lane. Thanks so much, hon!
