These are a delicious fun sandwich to make and eat. Great served Minestrone or other soup. You can make the turnovers ahead, refrigerate and bake later. I got this recipe years ago from "My Great Recipes". They are a favorite around here.

Ingredients
  • 1 to 1 1/4 lbs. bulk Italian sausage
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green pepper
  • 1 can (8oz) tomato sauce
  • 3 tablespoon dried bread crumbs
  • 18 sheets phylo dough
  • 3/4 cup melted unsalted butter, to brush dough
  • 6 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, to sprinkle on dough
  • 3 (1oz ) Mozzarella cheese

Directions
  1. --------preheat oven to 375.F-----------
  2. In a large frying pan, brown the sausage with the onion and green pepper. Drain off fat.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon berad crumbs.
  4. Spread each of 3 sheets of phylo dough with butter. sprinkle with bread crumbs. Stack them.
  5. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Place 1/2 slice (cut into triangles) Mozzarella cheese onto one corner of the dough/ Top with 1/6 of the meat mixture.
  6. Fold phylo dough lengthwise over to cover the meat filling. Fold up flag style to make a trianglular packet.
  7. Brush with more butter. Place on baking sheet. Repeat with remaining phylo and filling to make 6 turnovers. Discard milky butter solids.
  8. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
