Indian Fry Bread Recipe
Popular in the Southwest. It is sold at festivals, school carnivals and flea markets and fairs. We use it as a base for taco meat, cooked chicken, cheese and lettuce and chopped tomatoes. Fun base for all kinds of toppings.

Ingredients
  • 4 cups of flour
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • 1 generous handful of powdered milk
  • 2 cups of vegetable oil for frying

Directions
  1. Mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Add water and powdered milk to the flour mix.
  3. Mix with hands until it isn't sticky anymore.
  4. Add flour or water depending on what it needs.
  5. Mold into flt circles about six inches across.
  6. Poke a hole in the middle with your finger.
  7. Heat the oil about one inch deep in a large deep frying pan.
  8. Cook the fry bread until golden brown on both sides.
  9. Remove from oil.
  10. Drain on paper towels.
  11. Top with your choice of cooked taco beef, or chopped cooked chicken.
  12. Grated cheese, shredded lettuce and tomatos are good toppings too.
  13. Get creative. (cinnamon sugar for breakfast?)

I keep trying this but its just not the same as at powwow. I've given up on the baking powder version. I'm gonna cheat and use yeast from now on. It's so soft and yummy that way.


Being from the southwest I'm very familiar with this bread and it is awesome. This is a great recipe. thanks for posting.
