How to make it

  • Directions:
  • Combine figs, water, honey, 1/4 teaspoon salt and lemon peel in saucepan and simmer 1 to 1-1/2 hours or until dark and thickened, stirring occasionally. Combine 2 tablespoons flour and water and stir into fig mixture. Cook 5 minutes longer, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice and walnuts. Cream shortening with brown sugar until light and fluffy. Combine flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt and oats and stir into creamed mixture. Pat half
  • of oatmeal mixture into bottom of a well-greased 9 x 13 inch pan. Spread fig filling evenly over oatmeal mixture. Sprinkle remaining half of oatmeal mixture on top and press with fork.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned around the edges. Cut into squares while still warm. Cool completely before removing from pan.

A treasured recipe since 2011. I eliminate the honey and reduce the brown sugar to 5 teaspoons. I substitute 1ea. 8 oz package cream cheese + 1/4 cup oil for the shortening (simply because I do not not keep shortening)

Why are people rating this recipe, if they haven't even tried making it, and then tasting it? There is no point rating, if you haven't tried to make it, please.... it doesn't help anyone. We can all see that a recipe "looks good". But if no one else has made them, why would I want to try, based on so many 5 star ratings of people who think it might be good. Please keep these thoughts to yourself, and only comment if you've made it... so that it will actually help other people (or comment without rating it - PLEASE).

I will say the recipe says "takes 30 minutes to make". umm... to BAKE yes, to MAKE no. To make, it takes about 2-2.5 hours (I have a terrible habit of not reading all the steps until I'm in it [I know, I know] and was bemused by the time difference). With that said, I baked this recipe yesterday with fresh figs from a friends tree. They taste amazing! I made them in a tray of tiny loaves/bars but I'm sure you could use cupcake tins instead, which worked REALLY well for individual sized pieces because the sides get nice and firm when you bake them just a little longer. GREAT recipe! Thank you!

These are AWESOME! I tried these while visiting a friend today. I kept waiting for her to offer me another bar, but she never did. dang it! I'm now waiting on my fig farmer to let me know when his figs are ready again. I can't wait to make these myself! Great with coffee, btw.
    This is a KEEPER!

These sound really good. How much walnuts do we need?

I'm sure with the walnuts, lemon peel and all that brown sugar and honey these will be way better than Fig Newtons!
