Stuffed Italian Sausage Tailgate Loaf Recipe
Great make-ahead for a tailgate party. Makes me think of the old 3 Rivers Stadium where we had this for the first time when the high school team made the playoff finals. Of course, I was there for the band...specifically the majorettes!

Ingredients
  • 1 French bread loaf, hollowed out, cut off both ends before hollowing and stuffing, reserve ends
  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage, Hot or sweet (of course I like HOT!)
  • 1/2 pound ground beef, extra lean
  • 1 onion, medium, chopped
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Directions
  1. Leave a 1/2" shell when hollowing out bread. Reserve removed bread & make crumbs.
  2. Cook meats and onion in a skillet until well-browned; drain well. Add 1 cup reserved bread crumbs, cheese, egg, parsley, mustard, fennel, salt and pepper and mix well. Spoon meat mixture into bread shell. Replace ends and secure with toothpicks.
  3. Mix together melted butter and garlic & nuke for 1 minute on high. Brush garlic butter over outside of loaf. Wrap securely in foil. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Remove foil and slice into thick pieces.
  4. If you're doing this to take to a tailgate or other party (or just want to make these ahead of time) just bake and take in the foil. Can reheat nicely.
