Spicy Jamaican Meatish Patties

- 1/2 cup TVP granules shopping list
- 3 - 4 tbsp hot vegetable broth shopping list
- 1/3 cup red onion, minced shopping list
- 2 tsp olive oil shopping list
- 1/2 cup diced tomatoes shopping list
- 1/2 tsp salt shopping list
- 1 tbsp garlic powder shopping list
- 3/4 tsp mustard powder shopping list
- 1 tsp Tabasco shopping list
- 1 tsp curry powder shopping list
- 1 tsp cornstarch shopping list
- 2 1/4 cups flour shopping list
- 1 tbsp curry powder shopping list
- 1/2 cup shortening shopping list
- 1 egg yolk shopping list
- 1/4 cup cold water shopping list
How to make it
- Combine TVP and broth in a small dish. Let stand 10 minutes.
- Saute onion in the olive oil over medium heat until golden.
- Stir in diced tomatoes, salt, garlic powder, mustard powder, Tabasco and curry powder.
- Cook, stirring, 1 minute.
- Stir in the cornstarch, followed by the TVP, and cook 1 minute more.
- Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
- Preheat oven to 450F.
- Combine flour and curry powder in a large bowl.
- Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.
- Beat together egg yolk and water.
- Stir into flour mixture until it just forms a pastry dough.
- Roll out on a floured surface and divide into 15 squares.
- Place equal amounts of filling on a 1/2 of each square and fold pastry over it, pressing with fork to seal seams.
- Place prepared pastries on baking sheets. Dock each pastry with a fork.
- Bake for 12 minutes, serve immediately or cool completely on sheets for freezer storage.
