English Lasagna Recipe
I know it sounds strange, but my MIL makes this every time she visits & we devour it! It's not entirely a myth about English cooking, but there is a lot of great food (& cooks) back in Blighty.

Ingredients
  • 12 no-bake lasagna noodles
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cups mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 pint beef broth
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3T margarine
  • 2T flour
  • 1 pint milk
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar, grated
  • 1T (heaping) tomato paste
  • oregano
  • basil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. In a large skillet, brown onion over high heat until translucent.
  3. Add beef & cook until browned.
  4. Add tomatoes (w/juice), tomato paste, salt & pepper, oregano & basil.
  5. When combined add beef broth.
  6. Add mushrooms
  7. Turn down the heat & let simmer while you make the cheese sauce:
  8. Melt margarine in a large heavy saucepan over high-ish heat.
  9. Add flour gradually.
  10. When flour is absorbed, add milk slowly, adding more whenever it is all combined. Whisk constantly.
  11. When milk is all in the pan, add cheese & stir until melted.
  12. Remove from the heat & set aside.
  13. Put some pan liquid in the bottom of a 13x9 baking dish, then layer:
  14. noodles, then meat sauce (with plenty of liquid).
  15. Repeat these layers until the ingredients are gone.
  16. Pour cheese sauce over the top.
  17. Bake for 45 minutes.
