How to make it

  • Cream butter and shortening; add sugar, beating until smooth.
  • Add egg yolks, beat well.
  • Combine flour and soda; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk.
  • Stir in vanilla, coconut and pecans.
  • Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
  • Pour into 3 greased 9 inch cake pans.
  • Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 25 minutes or until done..
  • Icing:
  • Beat cream cheese and butter until fluffy.
  • Blend in sugar gradually; stir in vanilla.
  • Spread frosting between layers, over top and around sides of cake.
  • Sprinkle pecans on top of cake.
