These are not your usual cabbage rolls. We made enough for 400 for a dinner at our American Legion.. Never again, in the mist of doing it we asked who's bright idea it was.. Every one who ate loved them.

Ingredients
  • 2 heads cabbage
  • 1 c. cooked rice
  • 1 c. seasoned bread crumbs
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 lb. ground beef or pork
  • 1 c. chopped onions
  • 1/4 c. chopped parsley
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1/4 tsp. thyme
  • 4 tsp. sage
  • Salt and pepper

Directions
  1. Parboil large leaves of cabbage for a few minutes until pliable.
  2. Brown meat in a little oil, remove meat; brown onions, remove them.
  3. Drain off excess oil, add water to make a light brown gravy.
  4. Pour out and reserve.
  5. Put meat, rice, bread crumbs and all seasoning in pan.
  6. Mix thoroughly while heating through, turn off heat; add eggs,
  7. and mix again.
  8. Place correct amount of stuffing in center of each
  9. cabbage leaf.
  10. Fold in sides of leaf, roll up tightly and place in a 9x13 pan.
  11. If they are packed tight and fill the pan, they will
  12. usually not need to be secured with toothpick. Heat brown gravy
  13. which you make from reserved drippings and pour over rolls.
  14. Bake at 350 until bubbly.
  15. I do not use the home made gravy because of fat.. I purchase 2 packages of brown gravy mix and use that..
