Ingredients
  • Dough:
  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. orange zest
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Glaze and decorations:
  • 1 egg white
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • Red candied cherries
  • Green candied citron

Directions
  1. Cream butter, shortening and sugar. Add orange zest and eggs. Mix in flour. Roll dough by rounded teaspoonfuls into ropes about 6" long. Form each rope into a circle, bringing one over and through into a single knot (kind of like a shoelace). Let ends extend 1/2". Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  2. For Glaze and decorating:
  3. Beat egg white until foamy, adding sugar 1 Tbsp. at a time. Brush tops of cookies with egg white mixture. Press tiny bits of candied cherries on center of knot for holly berries, and make little leaves from the citron. Bake at 400* for 10 minutes or until set. Do not let brown. Immediately transfer to wire racks.
