Native American Fry Bread Recipe
I was taught this recipe in Junior High (in south Minneapolis). You can serve it with jam, but I like it plain, as a side dish.

Ingredients
  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 tbsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup warm water

Directions
  1. Mix flour, baking powder and salt.
  2. Gradually add in the shortening and water.
  3. Add only enough water to make dough stick together.
  4. Knead dough until smooth, make into fist-sized balls.
  5. Cover them with a towel for 10 minutes then pat them out into circles about the size of a pancake.
  6. Fry in hot cooking oil in cast iron skillet until brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels,

The Kumeyaay Indians in So. California eat this with either honey, blueberry jam, manzinita berry jam or rolled around beef, or pork.


I love fry bread! My mom made these allot when I was a kid.. my kids love them also!


I love fry bread, had my first at a Dv shelter I worked at with one of the Native Woman that cooked with me.
