How to make it

  • Sift first three ingredients into a bowl.
  • Cut in the 2/3 cup butter until mixture resembles corn meal.
  • Beat egg, add to flour mixture, mixing lightly.
  • Press dough in a 9 x 13 inch pan with your fingers, bringing up the sides about an inch.
  • Core and peel apples.
  • Cut into slices.
  • Arrange close together in rows on the pastry dough.
  • Cut the 1/4 cup butter into the remaining sugar, flour & cinnamon until crumbly.
  • Sprinkle the apples with the sugar topping.
  • Bake at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes.
  • This cake can be served warm or cold.
  • I love it warm and with Edy's Vanilla Bean ice cream (but that's just me).
