How to make it

  • Boil water and salt
  • Stir in cornmeal and butter.
  • Cook until thickened.
  • Add beaten egg yolks.
  • Stir in milk gradually.
  • Beat egg whites until stiff.
  • Fold into cornmeal mixture.
  • Pour into greased two quart baking dish.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.
  • Serve at once with extra butter.
  • Mom always used a pat of butter to "gild the lily" by rubbing it very lightly over the hot bread.
