Ingredients

How to make it

  • Layer the ingredients in a cream can, pour the beer over the top.
  • Put the lid on the cream can and cook over a camp fire.
  • Cook for about 2 hours or until the vegetables are tender.
  • If you have a large pressure cooker, it can be cooked 30 minutes.
  • NOTES-The only difficult thing about this recipe is finding a cream can. They are becoming a relic of the past. They were used to collect milk or to gather the cream off of the top of the milk once it had settled over night. I found one at a farm sale for $20. I don't know if I over-paid for it or not. But if you consider it to be a cooking pan, it was a good deal.

What a wonderful recipe. Love the memories you have invoked. I can see this in my mind's eye, but the only camping I do is at the Holiday Inn, these days. LOL, creaky bones and all.

this is fascinating. i am going to look that up about the cream can. i was looking at campfire pots today on ebay. they make an iron pot called potjie. there is a stew called potjiekos that is layered meat and vegies with wine poured over.
