Submitted to allrecipes by Lynn, this is her great grandmother's recipe from 1938. The cake is made with caramelized sugar.

Ingredients
  • 1 3/4 cups white sugar
  • 1/3 cup hot water
  • 3 cups sifted cake flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup milk

Directions
  1. Prepare burnt sugar by placing 1/2 cup white sugar into a heavy skillet over medium high heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon as sugar melts. When sugar turns a very dark brown, remove from heat and add hot water VERY slowly. Stir until dissolved. Set aside to cool.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  3. Line two 9" round baking pans with parchment paper.
  4. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together three times.
  5. Cream the butter with remaining 1 1/4 cups white sugar until light and fluffy.
  6. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each.
  7. Stir in vanilla and burnt sugar syrup mixture.
  8. Add dry ingredients and milk alternately to the creamed mixture.
  9. Beat until smooth.
  10. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  11. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes OR until inserted toothpick comes out clean.

Aunt Emma used to make this for me when we'd visit her on Sundays. It is one of my favorites. You don't happen to have the frosting recipe ,too?Thanks for the post!!


I've never tasted this cake and don't have any frosting recipe for it, fish; however, I will definitely check around to see if one comes to the top for you. Please enjoy! Aunt Emma would want you to like this one.
