Very Old Fashioned White Cake Recipe
A very old recipe, ( 1900's ) unusal but post here for those who enjoy these kind of recipes. I never tried this one and it is intriquing to me in it's preparation. No baking times or temps were given- I just added them in

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 8 egg whites, slightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups pastry flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder

Directions
  1. Cream three-quarters cup of butter and one and one-quarter cups of sugar very well.
  2. Stop stirring, pour one-half cup of cold water on top of butter mixture and whites of eight eggs slightly beaten on top of water; do not stir, add one teaspoon of vanilla.
  3. Sift two and one-half cups of pastry flour, measure, then mix with two heaping teaspoons of baking-powder, and sift three times.
  4. Add to cake mixture and then beat hard until very smooth.
  5. Turn into ungreased angel cake pan, place in slow oven. -300F
  6. Let cake rise to top of pan, then increase heat ( 350F ) and bake until firm.
  7. Invert pan, when cool cut out.
