Ingredients

How to make it

  • Peel the potatoes. If you slice them, they cook much more quickly. Boil them in heavily salted water until fork tender, then drain.
  • Put the butter in the mixing bowl, and the potatoes on top. Cover for five minutes or so (this melts the butter and makes the potatoes easier to mash without nasty lumps). Use the whisk attachment, scraping down the sides and adding milk a tablespoon at a time as necessary. Add salt, and serve with anything.
  • My mother didn't use so much butter in the potatoes (about half what I use), but she'd always plop a whole stick on top, so it would melt into yellow pools all over the mashed potatoes.

Sounds like mine, except I use white potatoes and I add a little salt and don't measure the milk, lol. I've made them so much I just KNOW what it looks like. I'm sure everyone has those recipes! I'm always the "mashed potato maker" at get-togethers!

These are whipped potatoes for those who like air filled and don't like lumps. Nothing wrong with that, but mashed are truely mashed and are going to have lumps and are sometimes called smashed potatoes. My favorite, To each his own, it's just food. Try adding a LITTLE white pepper. It's classic with mashed or whipped potatoes. ENJOY!
