    Brazilian Black Bean Soup
    posted by Winslow1204

Found an interesting fact at livestrong.com... It says that while black beans are high in protein, they are missing an essential amino acid the body needs to build complete protein. Rice, tortillas, or other grain foods contain the amino acid to complete that protein.

So I made this soup and ate it with warmed tortillas... :)

I did cut way back on the garlic and also the salt since I used chicken broth made with bouillon instead of adding plain water. Didn't puree half in the blender as the recipe says, just gave it a few whirls with my immersion blender.

If you enjoy the flavor of orange and cumin and are looking for the health benefits from beans, this is a quick, easy & delicious soup for you to try! As with any soup, the flavors blend and improve the longer it simmers before serving. I probably simmered it for about 20 mins.

It smells a lot orange-y when you first add the juice, but as it simmers the flavor tones down considerably. I WANTED to be able to taste orange, so I even added a little more juice at the end. The cumin, garlic and the orange seem to blend and make a unique flavor of their own...

Got your nerve calling this soup. It's bean mud pie but so wonderfully flavorful. Note to others: Add more orange juice to get it liquidy texture like soup. I did not.
I taste lime and cilantro overtones. Maybe that's what the orange does when its simmered. My pic is on the recipe page. Started with dry beans. Added a few slices of orange when plated up to try to help bolster the orange flavor.
I like this recipe, even though it is misnamed.
Tried explaining what it taste like and resembled to mother and she just laughed and said that was exactly what she was thinking.

Well, yeh bean mud pie makes for a good visual but soup sounds more civilized...

I thought the flavors in this "soup" were better than other black bean soups I'd made. I agree that it benefits from a little more juice. Did you blend/mash yours or leave the beans intact?

Blended half in a food processor per spec.
Wasn't referring to you when I made the "soup" crack. It was pointed toward the author.

CILANTRO????? I hope that flavor's not in there. I will have to speak some choice words just in case. At least that way I will feel justified for having the taste of soap in my mouth. = O

This really looks good. I think I will have this tonight. And I like orange-y

It's just my interpretation. Might taste different to you. At any rate it does give up the taste of lime.

Did I hear the cilantro and soap issue be brought up again ;) I would LOVE to make this soup, it sounds delicious but it's gonna have to wait. I just made black bean soup the other day. I'm saving it though.

I made this tonight. I thought it was excellent. Tons of flavor. I made it as the recipe directed. Well, except the food processor part. I dont have one of those or anything like it. I used a potato masher while it was simmering. I might have got a bit carried away. I made a pretty big mess on the stove and all over my arm. Those beans kept sliding away. They just didnt want to get squished. I was determined, though. I posted a pic. I also rolled up tortillas, cut them up and put them on the side. Great suggestion GK

ML2C, there was no taste of soap..........er I mean cilantro. But I was prepared : )

Frankie, I could taste orange. Not much, though. I wouldnt call it "orange-y" Maybe a slight hint of lime as Points mentions. I did add an extra 1/4c of OJ for more liquid. Thanks for the suggestion there.

This was very easy and very good.

Thank you, PSO and mr p for giving this a try and writing such positive comments! Glad you enjoyed it...makes me wish it was "my" recipe. ;)

mr p you have a blender, right? If you want, you could use that to just "hit" it and smooth it up a bit instead of the messy potato masher, although your soup looks fine to me the way it is and the most important thing is that it tastes good! Just be careful to hold the lid on the blender because hot soup expands and you don't want it flying all over your kitchen...........................or you may have to be washing your mouth out with soap after all. :P

Frankieanne and ML2C, hope you get to try this soup. Orange juice and beans seems an unusual combination, but it really works. :)
