    Broccoli Cheese Calzones
    from jo_jo_ba

There's a pizza place in town that has a Spinach Pie I absolutely love! This Broccoli Calzone had a similar taste, and is so easy to make at home!

Using pizza/marinara sauce for dipping added to the wonderful flavor...thanks jo_jo_ba for a great keeper recipe. :)

Thank you for looking at it...I was really pleased. Never tried making a calzone before. I had purchased a package mix for pizza dough and then never used it...so I thought I'd try it here and it worked well. The filling set up better when it cooled a bit. I took those pics immediately after taking the calzone out of the oven and cutting it open (which I didn't turn over as the recipe says, because my calzone was so large.) :)

That looks so good! I love the way the cheese looks all oozy ;) Did the cottage cheese taste too cottage cheese-y? Ok I have all the ingredients once again and your tempting me! Would have to make the dough from scratch though. Like the idea of dipping it in warm marinara sauce too!

That's a very nice looking calzone GK! Bookmarked it to try out on my son when he comes home over Christmas Break. I have a major aversion to broccoli myself. LOL! Am going to look for or make a whole wheat pizza dough for it. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Great pictures!

ML2C - it makes me happy you think my stuff looks good enough to make! :) Unless you have an aversion to cottage cheese like Chuckieb has to broccoli I don't think you'll find it too overwhelming... ;D I used cheddar jack so that was a bit stronger cheese flavor that maybe masked the cottage cheesy-ness a bit. ;)

Since I wanted to make this because of my love of spinach pie, why not sub spinach for broccoli? We might just find a way to satisfy BOTH of you. :O

Thanks to you both for your comments!

I've haven't had cottage cheese all that much. I don't think I hate it though. I bought a tub of it like 2 weeks ago and never used it for what I wanted to use it for and can't remember what it was gonna be used for, haha! So this would be the perfect way to use it :) Anyway like chuckie I would have to make my own dough. Spinach would be really yummy in this I bet too!

I'm sure pizza dough from scratch would have been better and I would have done that had it not been for the box in my pantry...I feel bad if I waste food - even if it is just a box mix!

Shoot, the only reason I would be making it from scratch is cause I don't have any refrigerated or frozen dough on hand lol! I actually have never heard of it out of a box though GK. Is it pretty good?

I thought that it was adequate, ML2C. Actually, it was in a pouch - Betty Crocker brand, I believe. Couldn't be easier - all you do is stir in warm water, cover and let sit for 5 minutes and it's ready to shape. It even had that "yeasty" smell and taste.

Thank you mr p. I usually make nothing that involves dough of any kind... and I made this process a whole lot more difficult than it should have been. I've eaten calzones before, but this was my first attempt at making one. Determination to get a pic paid off... ;P

These are SO GOOD! I threw some chopped onion in with the broccoli to steam. I used the mozzarella plus some cheddar to make up for what I was lacking. I was so worried I would hate the cottage cheese but I was eating the leftover filling that wouldn't fit in my calzones with a spoon, lol and decided there was nothing to worry about cause it was yummy! I ended up buying my dough. I accidently bought the thin crust kind so as you can tell from my picture it's, well, thin lol. Still good though! Love the heat from the red pepper and I added a dash of salt and pepper as well. Posted my picture ;)
