Friday Recuperation

Good morning. Happy day after Christmas. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday.

Where is everyone? I waited to post because I really didn’t have any fantastic pictures to upload. It is sunny and cool out, the hunters are sort of active - one shot so far and it was close. Probably someone up the road.

Christmas was happy. Youngest GS made out like a bandit. We got him some tae kwon do equipment - shin guards so his legs don’t get bruised, chest protector, and a uniform that fits -- his old one was way above his ankles. He is a happy camper. There are a couple of younger children who could use his old uniform, so I suggested she donate it to them. He only goes once a week, locally, since, as he said in his ten-year-old fashion, with his schedule being so full he couldn’t add another night’s practice. Cracked me up.

The wild boar turned out great and was quite flavorful. The brown sugar and pineapple combination really added to the flavor. It had a not-too-gamy taste and was super tender. The chicken breasts should have been cooked for a shorter time and halved - they were far too large for one portion each unless you are feeding hungry seventeen year old boys. I posted the recipes while still remembering exactly which spices I used! We have more wild boar / pig in the freezer so I will be making this again. Supposedly the tenderloin is supper good. I will definitely be making it soon.

Sent leftovers home with the family. We don’t need the extra calories. Oldest GS is addicted to cheesecake so he guarded the pieces I wrapped for him to take with. T

So glad the “A Slice of Pie” had one to sell when we stopped by -- their stuff goes quickly around the holidays. The cranberry cheesecake is fantastic...you can see the pix on http://www.yelp.com/biz/a-slice-of-pie-rolla. It is a good place to grab a bite of lunch, if you don’t mind the calories. Altho they do have sugar free pies, I don’t know what they use as sweetener.

Squirrel is chattering as he / she scrambles around on the roof. Such a hoot! He is batting acorns and trying to get into the eve spouts, I think. Little brat! He has not tried breaking down the door yet today.

Hello! It is so hard to type with one hand. We had aquiet day. Olivia opened gifts at 9pm last night. She loved her gifts, a wrist fitness tracker, a docking charge station for her phone and mp3, one of those fancy curling irons, the callous remover, the veggie cookbook, three novels, a speaker/amplifier for her phone. Fred got new jeans and Hawaiian shirts. We had a late brunch at Allisons. I took over the fruit and Al cut it up. Fred put together the hashbrown casserole. He did well. the caprese skewers were well received. The rum cake was better this time around.

Christmas Eve service was beautiful. Candles everywhere, service was so lovely.

Fred is taking Skippy for a check up. The vet bill has reached 1800 dollars at this point, my hand is well over 900.00. Expensive skuffle.

Making a breakfast of english muffin and scrambled eggs. Dinner is yellow split pea soup with the ham bone i asked for yesterday. cornbread and leftover caprese salad.

Karen, so happy the boar turned out well. Sounds delicious. I seriously love your sunroom. i think we have the same couch!

    Take care, all.

So glad your Christmas went well in spite of the hand. Olivia certainly got some nice gifts. Wayne would not wear a Hawaiian shirt unless you knocked him out cold and put it on him then. He is ultra conservative in his clothing likes. I have broadened his horizons so he has a few nice, but plain, bright shirts, but he draws the line at Santa Clause surfing.

Astronomical vet bill! But from the description of her injuries, understandable. Gee - her vet bill doubles your doctor bill - what we don't do for pets.

Same couch? Wahoo! Great minds think in the same channel?

I found ours at FFO. The minute I'd say "something rustic" the salesmen in other stores aimed me at couches that would break my budget -- rustic equals expensive, I guess. I didn't have thousands of dollars to get a couch - aargh! These were quite reasonable, probably because they deal in closeouts and factory overage purchases. I walked in the door, saw the couch and said, "That's the one." They even held them for 8 weeks or so until we were ready for them.

And no one told the SUN ROOM POLICE that they were NOT the wicker, modern stuff that decorators claim are the way to go in sun rooms -- LOL. I can just hear them saying, "Curses, foiled again!" - ala some cartoon character that I can't recall the name, just the saying.

I posted the wild boar recipe. It would work for a pork roast or tenderloin, also, but the wild pig is a bit more gamey in taste, and needed the citric and sugar to tone it down a bit. Needed to cook the chicken less so I shortened the time on it.

Have to be at the fire dept. this evening so we are having leftovers when we get back. Do wish Wayne could go hunting this morning but he is occupied with other things and his buddy is not coming over to work. I must go and work on laundry or else. Holidays have finally caught up with us. Have a good day.

    Good morning:)

Karen, sounds like your boar turned out really well! Good job! I also love your sun room..I sure wish we could afford to have one built off of our dining room..I think Rick could possible do most of the work..one day:)

Tina, sounds like you had a nice quiet Christmas..we did as well:) Hope your hand is getting better! Oh dear on the Vet & Dr bills..they sure do add up. I know every time we have to take one of our cats to the Vet, it's always more than we anticipated..I should have become a Vet when I was wondering exactly what to do with my life!

We're going to Chico to take some ribs to my parents..he made a bunch..he gave some to our neighbors as well..I think Rick has had his fill of ribs for a while:)

Hope everyone had the best Christmas!

    Dinner???? Ribs & ?

Morning!! Sounds like you had a nice Christmas Karen! So glad the boar turned out well, I just knew it would :) Ah, chicken breast is so easy to overcook, it happens!! I guess a good thing for us about not ever having Holidays at our house is that we aren't stuck with TONS of high calorie leftovers. I make a small plate when I leave just enough usually for Michael to take to work or something. I usually pass on taking the sweets, don't need them! Lol at the bratty squirrel :P Will go check out your new posted recipes in a bit!

Wow Tina, Olivia made out like a bandit! Great gifts! Ouch on the vet and doctor bills :( Yummy on your dinner, I have some nice ham hocks in my freezer I need to use, may make a pot of purple hull peas soon!

Hi Marie! That's nice of rick to share his delicious ribs :) Does he do pork or beef?

We had a great time with Michael's family yesterday. They just stopped by for about an hour, we drank coffee opened gifts, and chatted a bit. Ended up making some venison chili last night, turned out delicious. Kids are just playing away with their new toys, and I am having some late morning coffee :) Dinner tonight is ? Will go dig around in my freezer and see what I come out with. Have a good day everyone!!

Ribs! I'd trade you wild boar for ribs! Ha ha.

Marie, I'd like to list the vet as a dependent on income tax. Fortunately our kitties are not sick a LOT, although the occasional UTI hits one or the other of them, esp. the males. My daughter recommended Merrick cat food (Amazon.com carries it) -- her cats are much healthier and don't eat a lot of it at one time. Maybe even see that Miss Kitty gets some, although NOT the ravenous raccoons and dive bombing songbirds that go after it also. They can snitch the cheap stuff. We are down to 5, only 2 outside and I keep expecting Miss Kitty to be gone any day, but she keeps on keeping on so we will enjoy her while we still can.

Squirrel is scolding something - he is in the trees so can't see what. Maybe the noise on the roof is another squirrel -- acorns or twigs are being batted about.

I love your sun room Karen. I think I would almost live in there most of the time. LOL and the rest of the time I would play in your wonderful roomy gorgeous kitchen:) You and Wayne have done a beautiful job on the house. Great to hear the boar and your Christmas dinner turned out so well for you. It is Boxing Day here today. Stores are famous here for their Boxing Day Sales as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_Day

Tina, Liv received wonderful gifts and Den likes his Hawaiian shirts as long as they aren't too loud. YIKES! Oh my goodness! It was an expensive canine scuffle, wasn't it! Glad you we able to enjoy a bit of a quiet day and your Christmas Eve service sounded excellent. Enjoy your breakfast and I haven't had Yellow Split Pea Soup with a ham bone in years and years! My Grandma used to make it. YUM!

Marie, Wow! Rick must have made a huge load of ribs!!! Enjoy your visit with your parents and I am sure they will enjoy the ribs.

Michelle, Glad you enjoyed your day yesterday and venison chili does sound delicious!
Hoping you have another relaxing day and no doubt you will find something interesting for dinner in your freezer for tonight.
My son and GD's are going to stop by this afternoon. Then they will go to Chris' half sister's for another Christmas dinner in Ottawa. It is a busy time of the year for them as Cailey had her 10th birthday on the 21st of December and then Brianna has her 12th birthday on January 1st, on top of visiting with Angie's large family and their friends as well. I don't think they get a minute to themselves during the Christmas Holidays. We are having Steak In The Oven easy peasy for Den and me.

Wishing everyone A Good Recuperation Day or Boxing Day!

    Hi Joce. SP Michelle?

So glad you both had a nice Christmas.

Venison chili does sound good. I may try it with some of the frozen wild pig we got from Wayne's buddy, also. Maybe. Wayne is limited on the amount of kidney beans he can have (weight loss diet) so I am having to rethink how I fix it, because I really like to load it up with kidney and/or great northern beans. Maybe more celery and peppers and onions, all cut small enough he won't pick out the large pieces of onion - LOLOL

It is still sunny and nice outside but I see a thin layer of clouds creeping up from the Southwest. Supposed to rain tomorrow. Grrr! It has been such a dreary month.

Hi Joce, hope you have a nice afternoon with your family! Wow on your GD's b-day's being so close together, much less so close to Christmas! Steak In The Oven sounds SO GOOD. That is on my short list to make :) Take care!

This is the venison chili I made Karen http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Venison-Tequila-Chili/?prop31=4. The only thing is that I added in some beef stock throughout cooking. We like a little liquid in our chili :)

Kids got a little restless so we ended up going down the road to an outlet mall so the kiddos could use their Toys R Us gift cards they got. Terrible idea! I knew it would be busy, but I had no idea! Took forever to find a parking spot and when we did we had to hike a mile there lol! Got to the store and there was a sign on the door saying machine for gift cards is down. What?! Oh gosh, Caiden doesn't understand that or care, he knew he was there to get a toy and he wasn't leaving without making a big ordeal where everyone around us was staring. Stopped at Starbuck and got some hot chocolates for the kiddos (made everything better:) and I tried their new Chestnut Praline Latte. It was good but not anything fantastic. I actually never go to Starbucks anymore, to pricey, I just happened to have gotten a gift card for Christmas :) Okay off to unload the dishwasher!

    Hey everyone
I was curious on how the wild boar would turn out.
I'm home relaxing. Worked at the office today. Frank is still sick refused to go back to the doctor said if he isn't better by Monday? MEN! I've never seen him this sick except when he had shingles. I've been sleeping on the couch since Saturday.
My girls love starbucks last time we went Rachel treated which was a surprise lol and she didn't even have a gift card. She isn't working at dunkin donuts this week. I guess they give the college kids that come home for Christmas vacation hours and the high schoolers get a true Christmas vacation lol
    Dinner is leftovers

    Hi all:)

Karen, yes, fortunately our kitties aren't sick often either..and wouldn't it be great to declare them as dependents! I do hope Miss Kitty is with you for a good long while..

Michelle, his rib of choice is pork babyback ribs:) LOL on going to Toys R Us the day after Christmas!!!

Hi Joce:) Oh I so want to try that steak in the oven for Rick some day! I'll add it to my planner..we did have Frenchmans Spaghetti a few days ago..super yummy stuff!!!

Hi Laurie..I think we will be having leftovers as well!

I am such a klutz..we were at Radio Shack returning a warranty I didn't need for the walkie talkies (it already has a warranty, 1 year, and I should have known that!) and was looking in my purse when I fell..I didn't realize there were steps! I'm OK! I hate doing that..I tend to fall at least once a year in the snow/ice, but not on a sunny dry day..LOL

Hi Michelle - Laurie - Marie.
Michelle, after posting I realized that if I used pork, it would not be venison chili. Aargh! I will look up the recipe. Thanks for sharing the site.
Laurie, the boar was great. I was relieved it didn't flop.
Marie, don't feel bad about falling. I had just bought a brand new pair of jeans when we were in Germany, and the first time I wore them I stumbled over a curb and hit he asphalt, splitting the fabric across the knee. Miss Kitty is about 17 years old, and has led a wonderful life. Recently, she became thin and the vet thinks she may have liver issues. At her age, we are just keeping an eye on her and feeding her everything she will eat. She was not supposed to live out the summer, but I guess she didn't get the memo!
Mel is on my lap, unhappy because I don't have a soft throw for him to curl up on. He loves "blankies" and will chew on them, completely zoned out, kneading away! A.C. is on Wayne's lap, his usual place.

Have a good day - or what is left of it.

So since we moved into this house almost ten years ago my front door handle has opened wrong. Instead of twisting down you have to twist up. Everyone gets confused trying to leave lol Christmas day BIL said I'm going to fix this and he did so now I keep getting stuck because after ten years of pulling up I can't remember to pull down!
