Meaty Monday

Well I was sure that there would be a thread started by now! It's been a busy morning on my end. RAINED,RAINED,RAINED over night and now all of our snow has disappeared. (Silver linings). The Hot Tub repair guy showed up promptly at 9 a.m. Thankfully Jim was here to point him to where he felt the leak was coming from and between the both of them they chipped away insulation and took off more boards and found the source of the main problem. Two little caps on some manifold? were cracked. It was a slow leak from both of them until the repair guy removed more of the spray foam insulation from around them and then it became a much faster leak! LOL! So they decided to simply glue and caulk those two valves? shut. The repair guy says there's another small slow leak over by the pump but it's virtually impossible to access because of the hot tub frame so we just left it. Bottom line is the Hot Tub is 16 years old and is on its last legs. Once the glue dries Jim will empty the hot tub (which is full of blue dye) and then refill it and we should be okay for the winter....and once the leaking starts up again in earnest or if something else goes awry, then it will be time to just buy a new Hot Tub.
Mom called this morning and we had a good chat. She is set to head to numerous bake sales and Christmas teas put on by the town's various churches and organizations. The medication is keeping her comfortable so so far, knock on wood, she's okay.
Lori, I think the book you made for Jason is awesome as will the one be that you will make for Hil. It doesn't have to be handwritten to make it a prized possession. Because you made it for them makes it a prized possession! We're in the 21st century now for God's sakes! :)
Karen, that was a nice experience you had at McDonald's re: the tomatoes and your daughter's allergies. Has your grandson arrived?
    Did your Texans win Michelle?
Do you get a door delivery today Marie?
Tina...hoping you're okay gf. Take good care.
Joce, how are you making out with all your moving and packing? Did you decide on the paint colour?
    Laurie, how was your weekend?
Hope the garage got your snow tires on and you get your car back today Michelle. Did you end up doing chicken or salmon last night?
Haven't narrowed down a recipe yet but I have a craving for Chicken wings. Need to think of a side. I have a couple of cooked beets left from the other day so can probably make a nice little salad. Sens Game on tonight so I thought it'd make good 'Hockey' food.
    Wishing everyone a great Monday.

Hi Janet:) No, no load today..Rick is installing the last door & opener from our last big load..things might slow down for the holiday..you never know though:)
I'm glad your mom has her pain under control, bless her heart...
Good that your hot tub has one good year left! I know you 2 use it often and it might be fun searching for a new one when the time comes:) Maybe one big enough for all your ODD pals:)

I'm headed to Chico to see Mom & Dad..then it's back home..I'll clean the house tomorrow and PRAY it stays that way until TG:) Then Wednesday will be TG prep day, deviled eggs, stuffing, cranberry relish & Rick's famous pumpkin pies:) I was wondering how I could make the mashed potatoes early TG day and reheat? I just want everything done at the same time...I'll also steam green beans until still slightly crisp and finish them off in a saute pan TG day..

Well better head out, I'll check back later:)

Dinner will be pork chops for Rick and probably chicken for me..we can grill today, it's cold & sunny:) Salad and veg on the side..

    Have a Marvelous Monday everyone:)

Good morning. GS came and is out in the public forest, tromping around to his heart's content - he is old enough to have some common sense and of course, even at 21, got the Grandma-safety -- don't-end-up shooting-your-Grandpa-as-he comes-up-the-lane lecture. The wind is gusting to 22 mph and makes it super cold outside. Deer are hunkered down and it would take a dedicated hunt to find them. It was 37 F this morning when we got up at 6. My hip weather predictor reminded me that it could be fickle -- no way I want to tramp in the woods -- too many widow makers (branches falling from trees) on such a blustery day.

I saw a recipe for sweet potato chili on AR - don't have a lot of the ingredients but decided to go ahead and wing it! I mashed the cooked s.p. and added it to the not-anything-like-the-original-recipe finished dish. It was pretty good and is simmering away waiting for GS to return for lunch. HB came in after 4 hours in the cold wind. I made him a cup of hot tea and we are in the sun room. It is set at 60 F unless we decide to turn up the heat, which he didn't, so he is comfy in the rocking chair and I have my purple throw over my feet. Wayne is debating waiting until tomorrow to go out again, since the wind is supposed to die down then.

Best go check the chili. I made drop biscuits to go with it. We will probably eat in the sun room - better turn up the heat or GS will freeze. LOL.

Hey Janet, glad to hear your Mom is feeling better. Sounds like she has a busy schedule for the holidays! Hope the hot tub lasts through the winter for you. 16 years is a pretty good run. :)

How are your Mom & Dad, Marie? I make my mashed potatoes the night before when I have Bryan's family for Christmas. I put them in a casserole dish in the fridge. The day of, I stir in a little extra butter, maybe sourcream or milk, just enough to lossen them a tiny bit. Then I reheat in the oven. Works like a charm. Grilling sounds like a good plan.

LOL @ the don't shoot Grandpa safety lecture, Karen. :-) I'd probably give my 28 year old son the same. I cannot even imagine sweet potato chili...I'm going to have to check that out.

No cooking for me. Stopping on the way home from work to pick up the groceries I couldn't buy at Walmart Saturday night, because I'm old and had to leave the head banging music. *eye roll*

    Happy Monday everyone!

I find from both past experience at the Hardware store and just life in general that it is very common for 'break downs' and 'projects' to occur close to the holidays Marie. So Rick very well may be busy. Time will tell. LOL @ a Hot Tub large enough for the ODD gang. That'd be a blast. Tina was talking about finding a recipe to make mashed potatoes in the crock pot. I sent her a pin I saw on Pinterest. I'll try find it again. I know my Aunt Viv used to make mashed potatoes for Christmas and then Boxing Day she'd have a ton of relatives over and serve up all the leftovers. I know her potatoes tasted good but I don't know how she reheated them. Your dinners sound good.
Sounds like you're getting some chilly temps Karen. Good luck to your Grandson. (Close your ears Marie) :) Your chili sounds nice.
Mmmm....now you have me wanting mashed potatoes after your description Lori. :)

Good Afternoon! Glad you got your hot tub fixed, at least for another Winter Janet. Crossing fingers it last longer though :) Good to hear your Mom is doing well! No, the Texans did not win :( We are having another horrible season. 2 yrs ago we almost made it to the Superbowl. Oh well!! Yum on chicken wings, how are you going to prepare them?

Lol Marie, PARTY in Janet's hot tub!! Whoop! I think all your TG plans are very well planned out. Mashed potatoes should be good to just reheat, and if they are a little dry just stir in some milk a heat a little more. Enjoy grilling!

I definitely think the “don't shoot Grandpa” conversation was appropriate lol! That sweet potato chili sounds delicious Karen! I'd take a big bowl of it right now :) Stay warm!!

Hi Lori! Hope you make it through Walmart this time without RUDE staff giving you a hard time!

Got the kids off to Grandma and Grandaddy's house, and had our Christmas picture taken. In one picture the kids are smiling great but Bri has her hair tucked behind her ear and it made her ear stick out awkward. Another one Caiden is not smiling but Bri's hair is fixed. Another one My head is tilted really far and weird looking. UGH. After 3 pics. Caiden was not cooperating anymore, so I have those to choose from. Next year we will go to professionals so maybe it will work out better. Now Michael and I are just relaxing and have the TV on the ID channel. Making Ginger Teriyaki Salmon along with asparagus and maybe some sweet potatoes. After dinner we may go and play pool or something. Okay off to be lazy until then :) Have a good day everyone!

I have made wings just as you described Janet, which I love, but this is Michael's favorite way and I admit they are DELICIOUS! They are fried though, go figure :)

I'm baaaack:) Thanks for the mashed potatoe tips ladies! I will try my hand at making them the day before and reheat in the oven:)

Janet, yes, you are so right..just cause it's a holiday doesn't mean breakdowns stop! Good luck locating an ODD hot tub my dear:-D

Michelle..LOL, I know, I know..I just tend to fret just a tiny bit at TG..can you tell:) It will be a wonderful dinner, it always is:) whoo hoo

Lori, love the idea of making mashed potatoes the day before and reheating in the oven:) TY Oh gosh, that brings back memories of working full time and having to grocery shop after work:( Have a good day:) Hope the grocery shopping goes quickly & smoothly:)

Karen , it's always a good idea to instill gun safety over & over again..your a great Grandma:) Rick has a couple of guns for safety reasons and I personally don't care about them..which is kindof funny since I was going to go into law enforcement when I was younger..what was I thinking? LOL Now if someone was breaking into our home and trying to kill me, I would not have a problem blowing him/her away:) FSW is in the house:-D

    Hi Joce:) Hi Tina:)

Sounds like you're having a lovely day Michelle! LOL @ the christmas pics. It's always something isn't it! Benjamin used to take the worst school photos ever. His eyes would be shut or one would be looking sideways or his hair would be crazy. Too funny. And he'd NEVER smile. We gave up later in high school and didn't put him through it anymore. :) Your dinner sounds amazing. Have a really nice evening with your hubby! :) Thanks for the link to the wings. I'm afraid the honey part wouldn't fly with Jim (Mr. don't like sweet with my meat) and I really do prefer to bake. But thank you and they do sound delicious. I'd certainly think that the Downton seasons would be on Netflix?
LOL @ "FSW is in the house". Saw your post on the Downton thread re: Downtown rediscovered. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention. SO excited! :)
It got up to 18C/64F this afternoon! Couldn't believe it! Jim helped me plant some burning bushes that a friend had given me and I hadn't gotten into the ground before we left for England. And then I got the windex out and cleaned a few windows that needed attention on the outside as well. Ran to the store to get some wine for the Hockey game tonight. I can taste those wings already. :)

Gee Michelle, I don't know if DA is on Netflix..I know Frankieanne bought DVD's... you NEED to watch DA! I do think you would love it as much as the rest of us:)

Janet, yes, we bake wings then throw them into a big metal bowl, add just a touch of butter (don't know why) and then your fav hot sauce..works well!!

Lol at Benjamin and his school photos. This is the first time I've had Caiden cooperate (even if it was only for like 2 minutes) in a long time. For the past couple years he runs from the camera or turns his back completely to it. I'd have to catch him off guard to get a decent pic.

Marie I'm going to check Netflix tomorrow, we also have Amazon Prime, so I'll check there as well. YES! Butter is a must with the wing sauce!!

I found an awesome looking asparagus recipe that I know the kids would run from, so the perfect time to make it is tonight!

SP Marie. Hi Lori and Michelle.

Ha ha at the school pictures. I would probably use the one with Bri's perfect hair and use it to blackmail Caiden in later life with stories about how he never liked to sit still for pix and this was the best you could do. LOL.

    Has anyone heard from Tina?

No luck - both went out again although I don't think the wind is cooperating. Would like to have both get one. Supposedly this weekend was a record kill, but no one in this area seems to have gotten one, except one dude who must not have read the rules this year because spike bucks in this county are illegal and his wife was saying he got a 6 inch spike buck. Arthritis is aggravating me so if I go out tomorrow I will be living on tons of Motrin.

Can't think of anything quick and easy to feed two hungry hunters. Maybe a "low tech" beef stroganoff minus mushrooms (GS won't touch them) on pasta. I could make meatloaf but would have to leave in the middle of baking it and go pick up HB from lower field, so that is not the best idea. Wayne is trying to eat less so have to watch the calorie count. I do have some spinach - a salad would be nice. I will scan my bookmarks to see if anything appeals, should have another 25 minutes before HB calls on the radio.

Ya, that's what I sort of did with the wings Marie. I am doing two flavours. Lemon, garlic, pepper. Sprinkled the wings with a lemon pepper seasoning and once they're cooked I'll pull them out and dip them in a butter, lemon, pepper and garlic mixture. The second flavour is Buffalo wings. Tossed them in a bag with veg. oil, Buffalo wing sauce and pepper, then into flour and garlic powder. Once baked I'll throw them in a big bowl with more wing sauce. Made a tossed salad on the side.
That's an interesting asparagus recipe Michelle. I would have never thought to mix them with pastrami!
Tina's gone MIA the last couple of days. I see an occasional post on FB and Pinterest from her so I know she's still alive. :)
Karen, if the guys are hunting on your own property do you have to buy a license to shoot the deer? I had to google 'spike' buck. Never heard that expression before. Beef stroganoff over pasta sounds awesome.

Landowner (us) permit is free. GS doesn't live here so he has to buy a permit for 17.50.
We are having kielbasa in noodles with cream of chicken soup. I added celery and onion and garlic for flavor. No recipe - just tossed together -- similar on is on GR so no need to add.
They are back from feeding horses so must go -- supper is ready.

    Hello all.
Just popping in to wish all a very Happy Thanksgiving! Preparations are abundant here in the kimmie house. Cayce is on the road to NC with his father but he is still spouting out reminders via text to me, lol. Unfortunately where he is going , they have no use for Cayce and his culinary ideas. Father's inlaws and from what I have been told...............do not know how to cook anything, let alone a thanksgiving dinner! Really should enlist my Cayce......he could put on a holiday meal that would rock your socks! But alas............"they" know better.

    Sleep Sweet all..................as always...............

    Hi Kimmer.

GS is on his way home Supper is done Dishes are done.

Wayne is on his way to get the mail.

I am using the IPad so typing is iffy. I really need to use it more often! We are watching Mystery of Oak Island.....nothing much on except Love it or List it and HB is not interested in that.

Winds died down and it looks like tomorrow will be a good day to go out.

    See you altered. Take care.

Picked up a nice hot chicken pot pie and fresh rolls from Harrows. Www.harrows.com they make homeade chicken pot pie and you call and tell them what time your coming and they are hot and ready.
The car we were haggling on was sold out from under us :( Oh well not meant to be but I really wanted it! Lol. I'm sure there will be deals now that we are nearing the end of the year.

$17.50 is very reasonable Karen! It's $47.30 here. A Farmer's tag is $27.28. I would love the kielbasa in cream of chicken over noodles.
Hey Kimmer! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Will be curious to hear what Cayce ends up eating for his big Thanksgiving meal. :) Hope he has a good time.
Oh my goodness on the speed dial Chicken Pot pie Laurie. How awesome is that? :)

Love (and am amused) that you can get it without vegetables. :) Pies, rolls, chicken soup and just for Lori...chicken gravy for $3.95/pint. :)
Power went off just as the game started. :( Very high winds. Came back on mid second period. We were listening to it on the radio. The worst thing about a power outage is how boring it is. Can't get proper lighting to read, can't play on the computer, watch TV, etc.

    Hi Janet.

The longest we were out of power was 3 days. So glad we had wood furnace, kept the house 50 - 60 most of the day.

Kielbasa was an easy dish, quick. I sautéed onion and celery and kielbasa in olive oil, added soup and milk, mixed in with kielbasa. I used no yolk noodles for a change.

    See you tomorrow.
