Mundane Monday

Okay, my stubborn husband refused to do the prep for the test. He was in a fury yesterday. He did not do his eye drops. There are those days. He simply was not in his right mind. I have to remember he is brain damaged and deal with those days. Dr. got a laugh when I cancelled over his preference for beer instead of prep.

I'm serving clean out the frig supper today. There is a lot of dribs and drabs to be served and used up. Waste not Want not.

Okay, Laurie, I hope you were on your phone and you really meant something else with "not dogs on the grill" LOL It was a giggle. I love your theory of buttering Becca up for the next babysitting job with that awesome payment. I hope Rachel does well with her test today. Dating....yikes.

Dogs are looking at me....I've been up for hours, fed them, walked them (opened a door) and I think they want a nap with me.

Tina - love the summer avatar on the group.

I am tired of 98 degree temperatures. Ready for fall.

Wayne raked hay yesterday, and will bale this morning once the dew is gone. He may have to rake again if the dew was heavy or the wind moved the rows. With the AC in the tractor, he can do the fields even on hot days. We will probably not load hay until this evening when it cools down. It is supposed to hit 100 today.

I was gifted with 5 more zucchini, two are huge. They will become zucchini bread or frozen. I will have to fix something else.

Wayne just listened to the radio weather forecast - their no rain listed for the rest of the week is now 20 percent for today, which means his friend may have to load hay in the heat anyhow. I may be pressed into driving his truck but that is OK. Except it is two models bigger than our's and I told him he'd need to bring a step stool if he wanted me to climb in. LOL.

It is after 7 and I'm still in my jammies, so I best go get dressed. See you later.

Morning! GORGEOUS morning here in the Ottawa Valley.
Argh with a capital A over Fred not doing the prep for the test Tina. I totally hear you. I was with my Mom last year and she had to do the same thing. She refused to drink the amount of stuff required (that nasty nasty stuff) and I was so worried that they wouldn't allow her to do the test and we'd have to go through it all AGAIN, but thankfully they did. Did they reschedule it? And at least it's just a routine thing, and not something that is required immediately. :) I too giggled at 'not dogs'. That's a good one! :) Where is the delectable looking sandwich from in your post pictures? LOL on the giggles. I found them very 'a-moosing'. :)
How was Rachel's dinner date Laurie? Holy Kamoly on Becca getting $60 for 4 hours. A far, far cry from my old babysitting rates. :) Congrats to her as well for making the Soccer team.
That's awesome that you didn't feel a thing from the Quake Marie. I saw pics online this morning of wine bottles and barrels broken and in disarray in the Napa area. Goodness!
That Paleo ricotta recipe was interesting Michelle. Amazing how people are so good at subs! "Where there's a will there's a way" right? :) I would be emailing the Grocery store and describing my encounter with the Deli guy. Absolutely they should have been on the look out for customers, their 1st priority. With all the choices we have these days on where to spend our money, it's easy for us to choose somewhere else isn't it. Oh my goodness on your shrimp. Lucky you!
I'm feeling like a million bucks this morning compared to yesterday. Had a really good sleep. Heard coyotes very close by just when we went to bed and then again this morning just as we were waking up. Sooooooo eerie and so cool. Love it.
We've got major dew on the grass here as well Karen. It was super foggy first thing. I had to run over to the gas station to fill up the gas can for the lawn mower and had to put my high beams on so people could detect me. I'm gonna have to wait a bit before I get the mower out as it'll just clog up with the wet grass right now.
I was very disappointed in my Stuffed Zucchini Blossoms last night. (Put a pic of them in my avatar) I chose the recipe as it had said that it would showcase the flavour of the Blossoms but in actuality all it was was bland. :( Baking them as opposed to deep frying seemed to work pretty good. But if I were to do it again I'd add parmesan cheese, basil and prosciutto to the ricotta mixture. I only used six blossoms so have six left. Might try something different with the last ones though. But our steaks were cooked to perfection and I sliced up a big ole Beefsteak tomato and sprinkled it with Black Lava Sea salt and drizzled on balsamic reduction. To die for!
Tonight I am BBQ'ing Hamburgers and making
    Corn,avocado And Tomato Salad
on the side although I'm missing an avocado (REALLY???) :) I may ask Jim to stop in and grab me one on his way home. I have two cobs of corn left from Saturday so wanted to use them up.
I'd also like to make a batch of
    Gazpacho
Have been having a major craving for it lately.
Off to make myself a toasted Western for breakfast and catch up on a bit of Big Brother and Master Chef that I missed while I was in England.
Wishing everyone a most glorious day! :)

    Hi Janet.

Too bad about the zucchini blossoms. LOL on the missing avocado -- many times my recipes end up "altered" because of a substitution for the missing one or more items. Sometimes it turns out pretty good. But I tend to cook by the "concocting" method anyhow, and have to make a conscious choice to follow a recipe exactly.

Meanwhile, my kitchen is overflowing with zucchini and squash and peppers and cherry tomatoes. I have a recipe for tomato sauce that does not peel the tomatoes, but runs them through the blender with peppers, onions, etc. But the cookbook (an older Farm Journal - recipe is for ketchup but makes lousy ketchup but does work well as addition to spaghetti sauce) is hiding behind boxes of stuff that is in transition phase and hasn't been sorted through for keep, yard sale, give away. I would never get rid of that one even tho it is falling apart and stained etc. etc. I will google it and see if I can find the recipe of a similar one and if so - CANNING DAY! I am low on onions but there are enough for the sauce.

The guys are down checking for dew level now. They plan on baling and maybe loading the hay before it gets too beastly hot. I'm on standby for driving, but they may wait and do that afterward, in which case Wayne will drive and his buddy and son-in-law will stack. There doesn't seem to be much dew so maybe they can get started early. The hay is for Wayne's buddy. He has 5 horses.

Our 2 need to be changed to another pasture for a while but with the heat we have put it off because they have more shade where they are. (Access to the barn aisle.) They are really going thru water due to the heat - filling up the water trough every other day, at least. They have decided they don't like the water in the pond as much as before, for whatever reason. But it is an alternative source for them. The other field would mean filling their trough every day, since that would be their only water source.

Well, no word on the field conditions, yet. I best turn oft Good Morning America and do something constructive. Their recipe for chocolate chip cookies made in a waffle iron is more than I can take on a hot day. The weather gal on Channel 3 called for heat index of 103 so I will stay inside except for watering the plants on the porch, unless hay duty calls.

OK, the above book is finished - LOL. I will sign off and give your eyes a rest.

Morning! Aw, I'm so sorry that Fred didn't cooperate yesterday and now you have to reschedule! So now he will have to do the liquid thing all over again? Yikes! Cute your doggies want to nap with you :)

Too cool on having an AC on the tractor for Wayne, Karen. I know that makes his jobs MUCH easier! Lol you seem to have zucchini coming out of your ears! Good luck today if you have to help out driving the truck :)

Hi Janet! I should complain about that deli guy yesterday, I thought about doing it while I was at the store, but the kids were getting VERY fidgety. I agree on having lots of store options, but that one is my favorite and I know I will NEVER stop shopping there unless something tragic happens lol. Not going to let some grumpy deli guy steer me away! I'm sorry to hear the blossom recipe last night was bland. Now that I think about it ricotta cheese on it's own does need help. I think your are perfect with the additions you would have made, especially the prosciutto, that would have added a nice burst of flavor. At least your steaks were delicious!! Yum yum on hamburgers tonight! Darn that one ingredient short for your corn salad!! :P Hey I saw on the Cooking Channel that Master Chef Canada is starting up soon. I need to DVR that and catch it this time around!

Bri started school today so of course I drove her for her first day :) She was ready 30 minutes early and every 5 minutes was asking me if it was time to go lol. What happened to her dreading for school to start like she has been saying for the past month? Lol! I am FINALLY going to the Farmer's Market today! I am dying for their fresh eggs, and plan to pick up 3 dozen. Also picking up some deer sausage and I just read on their website they carry fresh chorizo now I may get, to see if it's any good. Of course a ton of veggies are on my list :)

Michael had Jury Duty today...he is so dreading it, poor guy :( This is about his seventh time of getting summoned. He is praying he doesn't get picked. I've gotten summoned once, but I get to check the box of I can't make it because I have children under the age of 12 :P Well, Michael at least got off 2 nights of work WITH pay for this, so I think it'll be worth it IF he doesn't get picked lol! Will be making Joce's Easy Shrimp Stir Fry over zucchini noodles tonight. Off to get ready for the day, have a good one everyone!

Lucky you on the veggie overflow Karen. I love this time of year when everything is so bountiful! Fun fun on canning! Ugh on your heat and high temperatures.
Awwwww....First day back to school for Bri. I always loved First Days back. Such a momentous occasion and a marker of the time passing. Very sweet she was so excited. Have a great shop at the Farmer's Market. Are they open every day? Ours is only open Saturdays. Good luck to Michael not getting picked for Jury Duty. Yum on the Shrimp stir fry.

Re: Jury duty - it can be terrible or OK. When I was called for jury duty selection the prosecutors wanted me on the jury but the defense attorneys wanted someone, shall we say, less opinionated about criminal behavior. I'm just as glad they did not pick me for the jury, esp. the one that was moved to another county and we had 1 hour to pick up some clothes etc. and return, and the round trip home and back would have taken 2 hours not counting packing! The powers that be did not take into consideration that not everyone lives in town, fortunately I was not chosen.

I don't think MO has the children under 12 exemption, it seems like there were several young mothers called up, but it has been a long time since I was on the selection group so I really don't know for sure. Federal jury exempts volunteer firemen. and a few other categories. I did let them know this farm gal refused to drive in St. Louis - LOL.- so it had to be where public transportation was available. For whatever reason, I did not have to appear for selection.

I must go find a recipe for canning cherry tomatoes without peeling - using the blender ? - or else find my Farm Journal ketchup recipe -- if it isn't totally buried somewhere.

    Have a good day.

Tina, Too bad Fred didn't cooperate before having his test:( Yes you can drink beer as it is considered a liquid as well. Den asked before he had his done and the doctor said it was O.K. Just no solid foods and the prep stuff as indicted on the preparation sheet. Love the make no Moosetakes:) Gosh that sandwich looks to die for!

Karen, Wow you certainly seem to inherit a lot of zucchini! How about a zucchini soup
http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-zucchini-1-32520 I bet it would be good hot or cold and would be easy to freeze as well. Here is also a whole bunch from Pinterest. http://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=zucchini%20recipes&rs=ac&len=4
Just hit on any of them that interest you and it will take you to the original blog or site and if you like it you can pin it to any board on your profile page you like or create a new board just for Zucchini? As Janet, mentioned most of us are on Pinterest and any questions about it just ask away. Here is an idea for using your cherry tomatoes, in your new new dehydrator, as well. http://www.treehugger.com/green-food/what-to-do-with-a-glut-of-cherry-tomatoes.html Try and keep as cool as you can today!

Janet, Yes indeed it certainly is a beautiful day! Thanks for bringing back the sunshine with you:) I saw a bunch of pics about the Quake as well. I saw one pic of the outside one store and the whole sidewalk was covered with balsamic vinegar which had drained out of the specialty store! Too bad you found your Stuffed Zucchini Blossoms too bland last night they sure look good in your avatar. I think your idea of using the parmesan cheese, basil and prosciutto to the ricotta mixture would really kick it up. Den would be all over your hamburgers for dinner:)

Marie, What are you up to today? Try and keep cool too today!

Michelle, Good luck to Bri on her first exciting day back at school:) LOL I wonder how long it will take for the excitement to wear off:) Good luck to Micheal not being picked for Jury Duty. I remember my Mom was picked once and the trial went on for over six months!

Laurie, How did the Chinese dinner date go? Wow she really did get paid a whole bunch for babysitting! Yes the “not dogs and broccoli” made me laugh too:)

Shona, If my memory serves me right? If all things went well with your house you will be able to move into your new house this Friday the 29th? Hoping everything is going as smoothly as expected for you:)

Dinner will be a repeat of last night. Garlic roasted blade pork roast with gravy mashed potatoes and corn on the cob or grilled stuffed tomatoes. I need to get outside in the garden and enjoy this marvelous sunny day! Maybe while I am out there I will wash and squeegee all the rain stained window too? Off to make myself a toasted bacon and tomato sandwich. YUM! One of my favourites at this time of the year!

Hoping everyone has a pleasant day!

Fred is not speaking to me about his test, for that matter, talking to me at all. I don't want to reschedule. He is the most stubborn man.

Dew in the morning, how nice. Not nice if it clogs machinery. Ouch on the heat in the middle of the country.....I saw that big red swath on GMA weather. Karen, I saw the waffle iron chocolate chip cookies. I don't think my waffle iron gets hot enough to make a good cookie. No way would I do ravioli and salmon in my waffle maker.

I've been exempt from jury duty since I was called when Tyler was about three. As the caregiver for a handicapped child, I was excused. I haven't been called since.

I've got so much to do, but I'm just not motivated. I can hear Lola flinging her dish around on the tile floor. Silly dog just doesn't do things normally.

Yep, the wine and olive oil industries in CA are facing a billion dollar's worth of losses from this quake. It is just awful.

    Take care dears.

I will check out the above zucchini recipes! Zucchini soup sounds interesting if I can get Wayne to try more than one sip!

I am getting into Pinterest a bit more. Will check it out later today.

Found the F.J. cookbook, propped it in my cookbook holder and have to pans of the blender-run veggies and spices going on the stove top. It smells wonderful. I miss canning! I may have to refrigerate it when it reduces by half, and make it tomorrow, depending on time constraints. The page is more splotched than white so I can see how much the recipe has been used.

I need to round up my canner and clean it WELL, as it has not been used for a couple of years. Wayne loves the blender ketchup / sauce recipe added to spaghetti sauce, so he will happily get it down from the top shelf for me. Heh heh heh! I did sneak a jalapeno pepper into it so it will have a slight tang. I will post the recipe after it is done so I can show the filled jars. If my camera cooperates.

That used most of the cherry tomatoes. I was going to dehydrate the rest - BUT - the dehydrator directions said to put fruit leather drying thingies on the bottom tray to capture excess juice or it could ruin the machine. SO that is off until we either go online or go to Springfield so I can buy some. I don't think I can find them in this area. Also it needs to be run without anything on the trays for about an hour to remove some odor that goes with the new machine, and will disappear after the initial use. Best laid plans!

Still planning on doing green pepper jelly. Really am! Zucchini is waiting for grating and freezing or making into bread or something. Squash (yellow) is waiting for inspiration. My arthritis is waiting for motrin - ha - but I am too obstinate to take it unless I absolutely need to. Hmm - maybe I should prep the peppers for the jelly and refrigerate so I could do both tomorrow. If the jelly doesn't set, it is great poured over cream cheese for an appetizer / munch / dip / Christmas party / etc.

That would be highly organized for me - I'm NOT an organize person.

I think supper will be meatloaf and potatoes or potato salad or maybe just salad if the sauce is still taking up my stove top. I froze some the last time I made it, and he does like it so doesn't mind repeats. Actually, he is rather easy to please and will gladly get a bowl of cereal if I'm caught up in canning, etc.

The quake in CA sure did a lot of damage. We don't buy a lot of wine, but do like some once in a while. MO wines are beginning to be popular. St. James Winery's Red Velvet and Schoolhouse wines are pretty nice. I love their blackberry wine. There is a winery whose name escapes me, about 70 miles from here, that has organic cheese, and German style wines. Heinrichhausen - I think, is the name. It translates into House of Henry. I may have to see about stopping by after canning season is over.

OK I have to go be productive, maybe bag up some tomatoes for Wayne's buddy - he loves them and I have far too many to use. The week needs to have several extra days added. Too much to do and too little time.

That is awful about the wine and olive oil industries in California Tina. If you don't feel up to doing something don't. Taking care of Tina is #1 at the moment. Jus' sayin'. :) Hugs.
LOL @ the splotched recipe page Karen. A good recipe for sure then! :) Am looking forward to pictures! Envy you the overabundance of tomatoes.
Just finished lunch. I've done over a third of the mowing and despite the hot sun I think I'll go back out, don my hat (no fashion statement here let me tell you!), and go do a bit more. That way I can finish off the entire yard tomorrow and have Wed. to clean inside. Tally HO!

The sauce is still bubbling away, on medium low so it doesn't burn on the bottom. It is supposed to be at 325 in an electric skillet but both mine are still packed away for future unearthing. I think the stove top burner is working better, not scorching anything.

I really am wanting to plant a garden! Or find a Farmers Market / farmer who will sell in bulk at a reasonable price so I can do more canning. Here come the guys. Got to go.

I have never had jury duty! I was saying that a few months ago at work and lo and behold the next week I got the card in the mail for today! But then last week I got notification that they didn't need me! I kind of want to see the process lol
We don't have that exemption in MA
Rachel did not pass her permit test. She told us she wasn't ready yesterday after knowing for months and we thought maybe nerves but she took the classes and online practice tests $30 bucks down the drain. Ugh she is going to study the BOOK this time and retry on Friday.
Rachel's date went good he got her a little silver heart on a chain along with a bag full of different sour candy (her favorite) and a jar of Nutella. Lol he also posted a collage of pictures of her on twitter saying happy birthday to my beautiful girlfriend. BUT lol they were all bad pictures of Rachel. Ones where she had food in her mouth, wearing fake glasses, her middle school yearbook pic. Etc. pretty funny.
Tonight's dinner is turkey shepards pie

Spoke too soon. It is not boiling and I might as well sit down and wait.
I will have to clean the kitchen extra well tonight. The home canned jars and clean, neat counters will make everyone think I am so industrious. Ha ha. If they only knew. The poor floor has been indoctrinated with veggie bits, water, tomato juices, you name it!

Has anyone tried banana pepper jam / jelly? I have so many I might just do that in addition to the sweet pepper jelly. Wayne won't touch it, but it makes nice gifts.

The canning bug has hit with a vengeance. Being retired has its privileges, I guess.

So cute about Rachel's date. I'm sure her pictures on FB are not horrible! And he meant well.

I love cookbooks but have to thin my collection before adding any more. It doesn't stop the drooling, however. LOL.

Dropped and broke another two dishes. Honestly, these little square bowls have been part of my dish set since our wedding. They held olives and condiments at the sandwich bar. Out of 24, I have two left. Phooey. I'm just have a bad case of dropsies.

I love my grated zucchini with nutmeg and sour cream as a side dish. It is so easy.
There is a whole new interest in canning and preserving. We have artisanal organic farm goods getting canned. It is so cool. I'll have to look up Aunt Mabel's cook book and see if she has any treasures that I haven't made. I'm the only one that likes the green tomato mincemeat, so that is a no go. I just hope my bag of little hot peppers hold out til I can can them. I checked and they are hanging in there so far.

I'm starving, better get the food on the table.

The recipe is posted. It is not my creation but I gave credit to the source and explained where I edited it. A stainless steel canner would be nice. Yes, I even managed to post a photo. The recipe is heavy on the sugar but that could be decreased easily.

Back to typing one-handed. Mel is appropriating one arm.

    The Pinterest link sounds cool!

A.C. and Mel found and K.O.'d a mouse that wandered inside Saturday night. They were very proud and didn't settle down until he removed the evidence. I think the heat is sending the mice inside looking for cover. While we bode no ill will for the miniscule rodents, our preference is to NOT share the house with them.

Off to attack the kitchen. It is past due. Leftover meatloaf tonight. I think a salad is in order, also.
