Saturday's Savoury Yogurt

  • chuckieb 9 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! Our temps here in Ottawa plummetted again so we're back at -22C/-7F. We were up quite late watching that movie "Boyhood". (It was okay, not great) so both slept in 'til 9 which is very unlike me but it did feel good. :)
Read a neat story in the local paper this week about the top ten food trends in 2015.

    1) Pickled, fermented and smoked vegetables
    2) Kale has been the trendy vegetable for the last few years but now bumpy root vegetables such as parsnips, kohlrabi and celery root will grab more attention in restaurants and home kitchens in 2015.
    3) Hummus
    4) Pistachios
    5) Oysters
    6) Tea Cocktails and Matcha - Mixologists are predicted to shake and stir tea into a wider array of cocktails. Also look for matcha to be used not only in antioxidant rich drinks but also to add vivid colour and flavour to foods both savoury and sweet, from pesto to panna cotta.
    7) Radishes and Cauliflower.
    8) Savoury Yogurt. Dense, nutritious and savoury vegetable-flavoured yogurts such as squash, beet and carrot will be allotted more shelf space in food stores.
    9) Pucker up. Look for sour to be a lead flavouring in 2015. Ingredients such as citrus, mustard and vinegar will tastily help balance and enhance full and richly flavoured beverages, entrees and desserts.
    10) Soft serve ice cream. Businesses selling soft serve will give it a modern twist by flavouring it with tastes such as ginger-lemongrass, and sticky toffee with chocolate.

I like the idea of pickled, fermented or smoked vegetables. They were talking about smoking cabbage. Interesting. Also pleased to hear Kale is going away. (Tee hee at Marie) :) And I quite like celery root. I thought Hummus was already a big trend as it is very prevalent in our grocery stores. I'll pass on the oysters. And Savoury yogurt....weird eh? But might be neat as accompaniments to meat or dinner entrees? And I like pistachios, tea and cocktails, :) radishes, sour and ice cream. Ugh on the cauliflower. Sigh. :)
I bought a big Eye of round at Costco yesterday and it was only $24. I'm not the best in knowing my cuts of beef. I lopped two steaks off the end and am going to BBQ them for dinner tonight. If they're good I'll cut the rest of the piece into steaks as well and if they're not I'll cut the remaining piece in half and use them for Beef Wellington or a roast.
Your sandwich last night sounded really tasty Tina.
Wow on the grass fire Karen.
On today's agenda is a trip across town to Lazyboy. We have a TV type table that will partially slide underneath the sectional and they told us upon delivery that it had been put together wrong and they would bring us a proper one when it arrived. So they delivered the new one this past week but there was a big gouge out of the wood on the back so Jim asked if they could get their tools out and attach the old base with the new top so they did. But once we brought it back into the livingroom and I set my pen down on it my pen rolled off. It isn't sitting level at all! Rolling eyes. Jim tried to fix it but it's just not working so we called Lazyboy back and they asked us to bring it in today so they could expedite a fix.
Sens Game on this evening. GO SENS GO!
Wishing everyone a most lovely Saturday!

Isn't dealing with furniture stores fun? NOT! We have noticed a lack of craftsmanship is creeping in, even in the "better" stores, however, I'm sure Lazy Boy will fix it. Enjoy your trip to town and have a nice lunch out.

The fire call was not bad, just COLD. The other departments were quite helpful and we have provided mutual aid for them also in the past. Fortunately, the accident was close by and without injury and we could go back to the fire scene in a few minutes. Now I have to type the reports.

A turkey is ready to get into the roaster - a pie needs to be baked -- and I need to get dressed - laundry is waiting, my new laptop needs to be exercised - fire dept. reports need to be type -- I need to scram. Sunday is supposed to have bad weather - sleet and rain but not a whole lot. Even so, it could prove to be an exciting trip - aargh!

    Have a good day.

Mincemeat - Wayne has been hinting for one forever. I will bake it later this morning so all I have to do is throw the store-bought broccoli and cheese casserole in the oven with the stuffing (too lazy to stuff the turkey, altho that is the only way to go.) That and a salad should be sufficient. Then to have turkey leftovers!.

I slept 12 hours. Dogs finally woke me up. A friend sent us an Edible Bouquet and we have been nibbling on it for breakfast. My hand is swollen and know my back aches horribly. (too much time in bed??). Trying to get the music loop for the memorial and pick the pictures to scan today. Liv is at work. Allison brought me some staples, laundry soap and bread, plus some delicious Publix salads.

Karen, mincemeat is my favorite. I didn't make one this year because I'm the only one who would eat it. Oy vey on the fire in an ice storm. Bless your heart.

Janet, glad to hear they will fix your furniture. Allison has one of those tables and she loves it. Neat list of food trends. Celery root, kohlrabi YES!! Pickled veggies Yes!! And if you think of Tzatziki a savory yogurt isn't too much of a stretch.

I need coffee, antibiotics and a box of tissues for this box of pictures.
    Love you all.

Gentle but big hugs Tina. Glad you got 12 hours sleep. If your hand gets worse go get it looked at! Edible bouquets are gorgeous. Good luck with the pictures and music. That would require a box of tissues for sure! I thought of you when I read the food trend list. True on the Tzatziki.

Now Janet, you hurt my feelings - hee hee hee- not to like the scrumptious BROCCOLI cheese casserole. [Giggle]. Come on down and you are welcome to some pie (I wouldn't push the broccoli).

Tina, too bad about your back. Bet you really needed the sleep. Edible bouquets do sound good, and so thoughtful a gift as I imagine you don't feel like doing a lot of cooking yet. Thinking of you often.

I drizzled olive oil and sprinkled pepper and garlic powder over the turkey before baking. Janet's favorite dish -- broccoli - will wait until just before the turkey is done. Have some lettuce that needs used up and check the freezer for anything that I can thaw and use to make room. I think Schwanns is going to frozen veggies if the weather doesn't stop him from getting here -- they take up less room and the company now carries organic.

Must go get the pie started. Back later.

Good luck getting your table all fixed and straightened away, Janet. I wasn't sure about the savory yogurts but, as Tina mentioned Tzatziki as a savory yogurt it didn't sound too bad then. I like celeriac, parsnips and root veggies and I am quite pleased Kale might not get as much attention anymore. Not quite sure about the pickled and fermented veggies but, smoked veggies sound good to me. I am OK. with Hummus, Pistachios and Oysters as well. Tea cocktails I can take or leave same as soft ice cream. Good luck with your steaks tonight, I hope they turn out for you.

Karen, I wish we were having a turkey dinner tonight! YUM! I will pass on the mincemeat pie though. Glad no one was hurt in the fire.

Tina, Those Edible Bouquets are beautiful and I bet very tasty to munch on. I am glad you finally got a much needed good night's sleep. It will be hard to go through pictures without a tear or two, I am sure the loop with music and pictures will turn out just great.

I am having salmon with a lemon dill sauce, tators and some sort of veg for dinner tonight and Den is having his normal Saturday night fare cheeseburgers and fries. Den did all the grocery shopping early this morning and he did just great! He only missed one thing on the list, sour cream. Pretty good for him. Gee I didn't realize it was afternoon here already! I will have to make something for lunch soon.

    Wishing everyone a pleasant Saturday!

    Hello all:)

Tina, you take good care my dear lady...going thru pictures does tug at your heart, it's a tough one, but what wonderful memories in each & every photo..I am thinking of you each and every day.xoxox Love you too

Janet..haha on kale going out as far as food trends go:) We absolutely love the stuff, and it's so good for you..I have to admit we are vegetable lovers thru & thru..now when I was younger, that was a totally different story..I still remember Mom & Dad trying desperately to get me to try spinach..I don't know why I put up such a fuss, I didn't even know what it tasted like..I think maybe because it was green:)
Good luck with the Lazy Boy fix:) Go Sens!

Karen, I wanna come to your house for dinner! Turkey is my favorite meal ever:)
Wow on the fire in the ice storm..so glad it all turned out well without any injuries..

We're going to see Taken 3 with Liam Neeson this afternoon, thought we'd go out to lunch and then hit the matinee.

I don't know what we will be having for dinner..probably something easy like grilled cheese and soup:)

    Hello to everyone:)

I am confused. That is not unusual - sigh - but there was no ice storm during yesterday's grass fire, just cold weather. Sorry if I confused anyone else. LOL. I think about 10 acres burned, but the guys put it out in about 3 hours. We have had ice storms here but they generally keep us isolated due to trees hitting power lines on the road and no power or exit road. The last bad one was so rough that even the chief could not get out, he lived in the country and was also blocked from the highway, Our current chief lives in "town" right off a main road so hopefully he would be able to respond.

February is our worse month for ice, besides January. So far so good. A little bit lf sleet but not so bad. Sunday is not supposed to be bad, but I cringe every time the weather calls for freezing rain.

Well, I don't mind snow but stay home rather than drive anywhere. Can not stand ice or freezing rain, so glad Wayne drives on it because I am NOT good at handling ice. Must go fix lunch - pie is done for later. HB is hungry. Such is life.

Your dinner tonight sounds delish Joce! Lol, Den did do good at grocery shopping, often even when I shop I come home without a something or two :)

Lol Marie at not wanting to try spinach when you were younger :P I have always been a veggie lover even when I was little. There were just a few things like raw onions I wouldn't eat, but now I love them! Enjoy your movie and grilled cheese and soup sound like a perfect dinner :)

Did some grocery shopping, and yes I did forget an item. Bri requested me pick her up some Doritos (yuck) before I left and I forgot them! She'll live lol. Also got Caiden all signed up for Spring T-ball. Real T-ball this time, not just practices. I'm a little worried because they couldn't tell me when the practices would be and I'm worried it will run in with the same time as something else. They will be calling in a month to let us know. Have a birthday party to go to in about an hour, not sure what they are going to do, they have teeny tiny house and it is WAY too cold to be outside in the garage, plus it's pouring down rain. Maybe they got a couple of heaters for their garage? We'll see. Pulled out some round steak (it's huge) and probably going to make
Steak In The Oven since it's super easy and I can just come home really fast (party is next door) and throw it in the oven then go back. Okay off to wrap the gift, hope everyone is having a good day.

Jim and Benjamin would totally take my share of Broccoli Casserole Karen. And in fact it is on Benjamin's 'Want' list when he arrives home (in 28 days) :)
Oooo Joce, your dinner sounds wonderful.
I ADORE Liam Neeson Marie. He's so hunky! His wife died in a freak ski accident on Mont Tremblant a few years ago, which is not far from Ottawa. Enjoy the movie and let us know how you liked it.
Hope the birthday party goes well Michelle. Your dinner sounds yummy as well.
Lazyboy said they'd fix us up and call us when the table was ready. Jim got his skates sharpened and we went to Bulk Barn. (I got some 'Hot Lips'. Love those things!) :) Grabbed A&W teen burgers and a root beer for lunch. Time for a hot tub.

Turkey is overdone, but the sample I snitched is nice and tender. Just put the casserole and the stuffing in the oven. I think the casserole will be done after the stuffing - not sure since I usually leave it in the turkey. We shall see.

Now to figure out how to maximize use of stuff from the freezer. If Wayne's buddy gets a wild boar I will seriously lack freezer space.

At the risk of exposing my dated TV-MOVIE-ology : Janet, although I have heard of him, I don't really know much about Liam Nesson -- ha ha -- well, assume he is one of the younger generation of actors. I will Google him later. Which DATES me, I know. I liked Capt. James Tiberius Kirk, the character on Star Trek, but the actor (Bill Shatner) didn't really interest me. As far as actors : the DA actress who also played Prof. McGonagal in Harry Potter, Maggie Smith, is one of my favorites, as was Clayton Moore and Red Skelton and Roy Rogers, none of whom are / were current except for Maggie Smith.

It is a heat wave today - 34F but the wind is really blowing. Wayne filled the horses water trough and picked up the mail. I have no desire to go anywhere. The sun room couch is too comfy. In half an hour I will go check the stuffing and broccoli casserole. Then it is time to eat. DW is ready to empty and the kitchen will need a good cleaning. I keep feeling there is something I haven't done that I should have, hopefully nothing astronomically important.

Have a nice rest-of-Saturday. See you all later.

We're back..gee..I thought I was the only one who had a crush on Liam:) He is super hunky..and Taken 3 was excellent:) His wife was Natasha Richardson (daughter of Vanessa Redgrave) it was so sad what happened to her..you sure hear that a lot..bad skiing accidents. I had no idea where it happened was so near you Janet..

Karen, on the contrary! Liam is 62 years old and 6'4"..sigh.....swoon......LOL That's what I like, he's considered older but plays a real bad_ss in the Taken movies:)
Ugh on the wind..I really hate wind...

Michelle, I know, pretty funny not wanting to EVEN try spinach..now I love it along with all green veggies..that's Joce's recipe if I remember right..steak in the oven..I want to make that for Rick:)

Oh Joce! You have a Liam crush too! I swear I thought I was the ONLY woman in the world who had a crush on him..hahahaha..what was I thinking?
