Snoozy Sunday

  • chuckieb 9 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! I was initially thinking of naming today's thread post "Salsa Sunday" and waxing poetic about the choice between salsa to eat or salsa to boogie to. :) But as the morning went on and I had my two cups of coffee and Toasted Western....I feel more like Snoozing than dancing. :)
Saw online this past week that the States are putting out some very cool stamps. Mini portraits of American Chefs!
    http://www.today.com/food/julia-child-other-celebrity-chefs-honored-new-stamps-1D80152397
Being issued next Friday. I'd be buying some if I lived in the U.S. for sure! :) Enjoyed reading about them too as some chefs I'm not familiar with and it's always fun to learn something new. I'd never heard of Joyce Chen before nor Edna Lewis nor Felipe Rojas-Lombardi. On my 'to do list' today to google them and see what they're all about.
Lots of leftovers in the fridge so I'm having my Chicken Coconut soup for lunch and then a Chili Dog for dinner.
Jim's arrived safe and sound in Cambridge and has a neat little apartment from where he can see the spires of some of the Churches downtown. :) The typhoon that was destined to hit Taipei hasn't yet. I think the schools have been closed.
I've never seen a fig tree. I am so ignorant about figs it's not even funny. Must fix that.
Jim and I tried radish cakes for the very first time when we were in Taiwan in April Michelle. So when I saw them on the Dim Sum menu yesterday I was excited. But I took one mouth-full and almost spit it out. I think they put little chunks of heavy duty fish in there. It was nasty. Ugh. :)
Sounds like you had a very busy day yesterday Marie. Ugh on the smoke in the valley.
And it sounds like you had a lovely time with your Mom Laurie. That Christmas Tree shop sounds like so much fun and I love the sound of your "G" pumpkin! :)
Oh Tina! I hope things settled down over night and that you're not feeling so awful this morning. Goodness you've been through the wringer lately! Your dinner at the Parkside Grill however, sounded to die for! I ADORE Beef Carpaccio. My eyes found "The Parkshore" immediately....
    Filet Mignon & Lobster Tail
    Cabernet Demi-Glace, Lemon Caper Butter,
    Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes, Asparagus, Hollandaise
    OH MY........
It's raining again. Pretty wet out there. Gonna just relax today and stretch and repeat.
My stupid dishwasher is acting up again though so I'm going to have to go diagnose it. I turned it on last night before we left to the airport and when I came back 2 1/2 hours later it was stuck in some mode not doing anything. Looks like it was maybe between a wash and a rinse cycle. Argh.
Wishing everyone a most lovely day.

I agree with you Janet on Snoozy Sunday! It took me forever to get awake this morning. I'm good now though :) I hadn't heard about the stamps! Too cool, I will definitely pick some up next time I'm near the post office. They would have them, wouldn't they, or is it something I would have to order online? Scary on the Typhoon! I looked up radish cakes and they all have dried seafood in the ingredients...I bet that's what threw you off, I know I would be! Sorry about your dishwasher :( Hope it starts working for you.

Tina, your day yesterday sounded horrible! I guess you at least got a fantastic dinner :) I'll have what Janet's having minus the mashed potatoes, extra asparagus. Hoping you start to feel better.

Lazy day around here today. The Texans game starts in 20 minutes so that will be what fill's our next 3 hours or so lol! I'm making fajitas tonight, but realized I'm out of lettuce to make lettuce wraps with them, so at some point I'm going to have to make a quick run to wally world and pick some up. I have a jar of Penzey's fajita seasoning that I have never used, so that's what I'll rub the meat down with. I'll serve them with sauteed peppers and onions, salsa and gaucamole! Hope everyone is having a great day!

Janet, I am glad Jim has arrived safely and it sounds like he has a wonderful view from his apartment. Gee I hope that typhoon misses Taipei and if it does hit it isn't as hard as they predict. Those stamps are very cool! I would buy them if I was able to as well. The only chef I had never heard of was Edna Lewis. Joyce Chen has many cookbooks along with a line of cooking utensils etc. Felipe Rojas-Lombardi has a soup cookbook I have been trying to track down. Soup is perfect for such a dreary rainy day! I hope you get your dishwasher on track again.
Relax, read and enjoy your day:)

Tina, I do hope you are feeling much better today. I don't like the fact your blood pressure is seesawing back and forth like that! When do you see your doctor again? Your dinner sounded absolutely divine! I would be torn between starting with the Crab & Avocado salad or the Crispy Day Boat Calamari. Then again torn between the Grill King Alaskan King Crab or The Parkshore Filet Mignon & Lobster with buttermilk mashed potatoes and Asparagus and Hollandaise sauce. A Cabernet Sauvignon would go great with both. For dessert I would love the Fresh Seasonal Berries with whipped vanilla Mousse with Shaved Chocolate, how decadent is that:)
LOL Now I am getting very hungry again!

Marie, I have never seen a fig tree either:( Very cool your parents have one and I did not know you could freeze figs like that either! Just another reason why I love ODD we learn something new everyday:) Sending BIG RAINS to put out those forest fires your way!

Michelle, I still chuckle when I heard you talk about your Memaw:) It is such a cute endearing name, we never hear at all here:) Yes do post the pics of Briauna all dolled up when she went to Sweet and Sassy last year please:) GO TEXANS GO! Enjoy the game and fajitas tonight.

Laurie, Aww that pumpkin sounds just perfect for your family! I bet that Christmas Tree shop would do very well here too. Glad you had a good time with your Mom:)

I did make Waffles yesterday and they were good. I have to learn how much batter to put into it. One was perfect and the others had either not enough batter or too much. Oh well it is a learning experience and so much fun:) The Waffle Iron cleans up in a breeze too! Not sure if I will post the one I did in IMI b/c I am not sure, if it was the recipe or just me? Doing laundry again! I am just about to make toasted bacon and tomato sandwiches for lunch and I am not sure what we are having for dinner yet! I will check in again when I have a better idea what it is going to be.

Hoping everyone has a relaxing pleasant Sunday!

Ya, I read online that some radish cakes have dried shrimp in them too Michelle. Whatever it was it was nasty. The ones in Taiwan had no fish in them. Waaay better! :)I've fiddled around with the settings and cleaned out the dishwasher filter and such so will wait til I get another load full in order to test it out. Keep your fingers crossed! :) Enjoy your game. Hopefully it'll be a blow out like last time! Your Fajita's sound great. Are you still getting rain?
I googled Edna Lewis. She was the cook for a restaurant in New York called Cafe Nicholson until the late '50's. The restaurant was frequented by William Faulkner, Marlon Brando, Gloria Vanderbilt, Marlene Dietrich, etc. She put out a cookbook in 1972 called the Edna Lewis Cookbook. She just retired in the mid-1990's. She died in 2006 at the age of 89. She was sometimes called "The South's answer to Julia Child". :)
I peeked online for that cookbook by Lombardi Joce but ya it looks a tad tricky to hunt down alright. I'm doing a load of laundry myself.

Joce, I still have trouble getting my waffle maker filled up correctly. I usually just spoon the batter in until I think it's right, but it's usually not lol! What I need to do next time is try different measurements with measuring spoons or cups and see what's right, so I know! Duh!

Janet, I even saw a radish cake recipe with dried scallops in it, yuck! No dried seafood for me please! Good info on Edna Lewis, I will have to look up her cookbook now! She was actually the only one on the stamps that I hadn't heard of. No more rain here :) :) Back dry, hot and in the 90's again. I can't wait for it to get in the 70's so I can open up doors and windows!

Well it's the 3rd quarter and we are losing 0-14. Uuugghh. I thought we had this one in the bag since the team they are playing (NY Giants) are having a rough start to the season. There, I changed my avatar for good luck!

Sorry your team's losing Michelle! :( Hoping they're turned it around now you've changed your Avatar. :)
I was bored and craving something sweet so made
    Chewy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
They're quite tasty but not exactly what I was going for. I wanted them to be fairly flat and crispy chewy but they are more puffy and soft. The edges have a nice crispness to them. Oh well...it was fun to do and now my kitchen smells good. :)

Got all the Halloween decorations up around the house. My favorite holiday! I need something for my front door but too cheap to pay that much. Went to target and now waiting on Rachel to come home from work. Spagetti and meatballs for dinner.
