Tasty Tuesday....

Good morning Everybody! Lovely morning here in the Ottawa Valley.
I'm about to bring the car over to the garage for an oil change. Jim is working from home this morning as the Internet at his office is down until noon.
    Having that
Creamy Corn Soup With Manchego Cheese
for dinner this evening along with some Bruschetta. (Again, trying to use up some of my tomatoes!)
I think a bit of lawn mowing is also on the agenda.
How did Becca enjoy her 'Cruise' last night Laurie? She started at a new school this year right? Congrats to Rachel being crowned "Team Manager". Good for her.
I would think you'd be able to keep your pool open year round is that true Tina? I was sooooo disappointed in my Fajitas last night and I'd gone to a fair amount of work making the home made Guac and Picco de Gallo. I have both cherry and big Beefsteak tomatoes in the garden. Thanks for the idea on using some of them up in a Greek style salad. That's a good idea. And I do like a good old Toasted Tomato sandwich as well. :) With mayo. I LOVE everything at Pier 1!
That's sad the baby deer died Karen. It sure was cute.
What's on everyone's agendas for today.
    Marie? Where are you? :)
Make it a good one everybody!

The same people were given another one someone else found and it survived longer - coyotes finally got it but it was coming along well until then. That is life out here. I would not disturb most fawns "found" because the mama will probably come back soon, they are hiding from predators until she returns. These two were definitely orphans.

No sign of Ezra. This is the first cat we have lost in 14 years, not a bad record for a farm in the middle of the forest. I'm hoping the fox was just passing through. Did not hear anything last night. Geezer is back to hanging around the porch again, he was sitting in the window looking inside for his dinner this morning.

I have to go can some tomatoes. Our grandson is mowing the yard and weed-eating, Wayne is on his way to run errands, and I have canning to attend to. We were given 2 big zucchinis, 3 squash (one is huge) and a bunch of cherry tomatoes. I roasted some tomatoes earlier and refrigerated them. Will likely use them in a sauce today for spaghetti, and roast more for canning.

    Oh, ha ha! Funny pun.
Sorry supper was not to your liking, Janet. Sometimes, it happens

I absolutely never tire of Greek salad or fresh tomato sandwiches.
Fred played a terrible joke on me today...and I have not had a cup of coffee yet. Ready to strangle him. I was counting dogs and checking bowls. "Where is Skippy?" I asked. He said, completely serious. "I had to take her to the vet, she was dying this morning." WHAT!!!!! "You didn't come get me?" My loving husband took her to the groomer, not the vet and thought it would be funny to tease me. He is going to pay somehow. I'm not sure yet, but I'll get revenge.

Laurie, that is the funniest dog story ever. We had a Great Dane when I was very young. Poor Duchess jumped in the Intracoastal Waterway and swam to another house to get away from the torment of a toddler. We couldn't keep her home and the other family kept her. Terrific about Rachel. Ugh on your day.

Spaghetti With Shrimp And Bacon is what I hope to fix for supper tonight. It looks easy peasy. I'm going to fix sauteed spinach on the side. I still get amazed when a huge pile of fresh spinach shrinks to a mere spoonful.

Karen, have you seen Ezra? So sad about the fawn. I couldn't watch "Old Yeller" without a near breakdown as a child...and forget "Bambi". I don't think hunting and the natural cycle of rural life would toughen me up.

    Have a great day, everyone.

Have fun canning tomatoes Karen. The last time I did that I caused so much humidity in the kitchen that water was literally dripping/running down the walls. :( Spaghetti sauce is always yummy.
LOL @ Fred getting a rise out of you Tina...and before your caffeine intake...doubly nasty! :) I'm guessing Skippy will not take kindly to the grooming based on your descriptions of her temperament. :) That recipe of Frankieanne's sounds very good. I too get a kick out of shrinking spinach. It's really crazy. :)
Oil change done and Jim has headed off to work. Think I'll pull out the lawn mower and do a bit of that.

I froze some cherry tomatoes today. Want to can more of them using Canned Roasted Cherry Tomatoes. Does anyone know why we are to use parchment paper? Do the tomatoes interact with metal or is there another reason or personal preference?

Hi Karen, yes I have heard tomatoes react to metal, especially aluminum pans. If it's a dark coated pan you should be ok, or use a glass or crockery casserole dish instead if you don't have parchment paper. :)

Was checking out Dahlia's recipe for her
    Lemon Ricotta Cookies
I bought a bag of Meyer's Lemons on Saturday and whenever I see them I generally make those cookies. That got me thinking about Dahlia and wondering how she was doing. I follow her page on FB so checked it out and saw that she had put up this post last month. Thought I'd share here for anyone who's interested. :)

Hi Janet! That corn soup looks so yummy! Especially on this cold snowy day today! We had 4cm of snow yesterday, and they are predicting another 5cm. The mountains are getting 10-20cm, good for the skiers I suppose. This is a record breaking early snowfall for sure, the rest of Canada still seems to be in summer though!
Lol @ Fred, I can't wait to see what revenge you have in store for him Tina!! Make it good! ;)
Pete picked up a few grocery's lastnight, I don't trust him buying meat or produce so we're going to have a simple bow-tie pasta dish. I picked a few apples off our trees so I'll make an apple crisp too. The veggie garden here has some rhubarb, strawberries, chives and onions still in the ground. I hope the snow does not ruin it too much as I haven't harvested it all. Some of the strawberries were still green. The warmer temps are suppose to come by the end of the week, maybe they will still get a chance to grow, I hope!
The onions have this big white bulbous flowers on them, do all onions do that or are these the ornamental type?? I've bought the purple allium ornamental type before, but these are white. They do have an onion bulb in the ground and smells like onion, I'd just hate to pick them because the flowers are so pretty!
Our dogs were great when we moved, but now our skittish huskyx Roxy is freaked out by the train noise. We live fairly close to the CP train track ( diesel freight trains), the poor dear is cowering, shaking and whining all the time. I do hope she gets use to the noise soon! Just Sophia is home today, but is doing much better, hopefully it just stays a cold and goes away soon! We're pretty much settled, still a few pictures to hang and a kitchen to re-organize, but I'm feeling drained so I am taking it easy today.
I hope you all have a great day! Hi Joce, Michelle, Marie, Laurie, and anyone else reading this! Talk to you soon :)

Hi!! Ugh I hate taking the car to get the oil changed or tires rotated, it's such a waste of time lol! Good idea on using tomatoes for bruschetta. You know if the tomatoes get out of hand chop them up and put them in baggies just eyeballing what a can of diced tomatoes would be and throw them in the freezer. I did that and I have use a bunch already when a recipe calls for a can of diced tomatoes, and it works great! Sorry your fajitas were disappointing. I hate when a dinner I worked had on turns out like that. I came into the ODD after Dahlia had disappeared, but I do know her from the IMI. I'll check out that link!

That is sad about the baby deer :( And horrible about the second one the couple adopted as well! Bad luck. So sorry Ezra still has not returned. Sounds like you have bunch of canning ahead of you :)

What a mean joke Fred played on you this morning Tina! I'm sure you'll get him back :P I can't wait to hear how you like Frankie's Spaghetti With Shrimp And Bacon I too am amazed at how much spinach shrinks. I never get the first estimated amount right and have to keep adding more.

Still in shock about that snow Shona, that's just crazy!! It's neat that you have apple trees! I have never grown onions, so I have no idea what they are supposed to look like, but I'm sure someone here will help you :) Aw, poor little Roxy :( She will eventually get used to it I'm sure. Glad to hear your settled in nicely.

Busy day today, FM run, couple other stops. I also just finished thoroughly enjoying Janet's Buffalo Chicken Deviled Eggs. I will review those later :) Have a dishwasher full and a full sink so I really should get on that. Dinner tonight will be grilled chicken over a big salad. Hope everyone is having a great day!

Hey Shona! So tickled to see you twice in two days! It'll be lovely to have you back as a regular again! Shaking head at 'cold, snowy day'. Poor you. Poor Alberta! :) LOL @ not trusting Pete to buy produce or meat. LOL. It's been awhile since I grew onions in the garden. I don't remember them getting a lovely flowery head. I think they mainly had green leaves. How close is the rail line? As a kid I used to love to put pennies down on the track and then have the train flatten them. :) I'm sure Roxy will get used to the noise in time. With all the major work you've done the past months and months you totally deserve a rest. :)
Joce...hope you're doing okay. You've had a rough time of it lately. :(
Thanks for the tomato tip Michelle. That's a good idea. Hope you had fun running your errands and I'm glad you liked the Buffalo chicken deviled eggs. I thought they were awesome and just a little 'different'. :) Grilled chicken over salad sounds yummy.
Got the entire front yard mowed so all I have left to do by the end of the week is the back lawn. Heard the weather may get rainy again so thought I'd better take the opportunity to do it when I could!

Hello all. Hope this post makes it. Posted last night but alas.......disappeared!

My heart is warm tonight, as I feel I made a difference in a young man's life. A couple of you may remember my posts of my son Ben's friend, Nathan. His mother abandoned him as a baby and he has been raised by his dad and grandmother. He always wanted me to adopt him........ Well, last year he and my son had a run in with the law and he (Nathan) was pretty much banned from my son's fathers house. But never really mine. Nathan then went to live quite away with his step mom. But then he came back to live with his dad again. But his life consists really of no one. He has no family life, no family dinners, basically..........no family at all. Apparently, it was felt by him and my son that he was not allowed here as it is with his father. Don't know really where they got that with me but they did. So tonight, out of the blue, Benny calls me and asks if Nathan could please come over for dinner. Of course I said yes. We had pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes, gravy........and yes, Janet........red cabbage. Well this boy ate like he had not eaten in days.........I watched as he sholved it in his mouth, which leaves me to wonder. He ate 3 plate fulls!!!! I don't think he had eaten in a while, at least not a home cooked meal! I told him and my son, that Nathan is always welcome in my home. I cannot "adopt" him but he is always welcome! When Ben was and he were leaving tonight to take him home.......both hugged me like there was no tomorrow. First, my son, who said.......thank you Mom for always being there and then Nathan....who said thank you Mom, may I still call you Mom, for being there. Good Lord, had to fight back the tears. Told Nathan, you can always call me Mom.............

Just reminds me, that while others may judge.............there sometimes is a heart there just needing someone to see and feel it.........

    Sleep Sweet All..............as always..................

No spaghetti for us tonight. Boo. I'm heating up soup. Fred said we had bacon. I believed we had bacon. We don't have bacon. I'm bummed. Oh well. Tomorrow is another day.

Joce, hope you are doing better. Miss you.
Marie, same wishes...hope the bumps and bruises are better.
Karen, sorry about Ezra. Cries in the night would have me worried all the time, I'm afraid.
Janet, I want to try those Buffalo chicken deviled eggs too. Liv would love them. Fred not so much.

Skippy came home in a pretty pink bow. She currently has her face buried in the corner of the recliner, her back to me. She is not going to forgive us the indignity of a close shave. Her nose is down and her tail tucked under. Molly is in her thunder shirt and resting her head on my right foot. Charlie is busy snoring on the dog couch. Lola has her body on the other foot and is trying to nudge it into shape like a pillow with her head. Honestly. Velcro would be easier to peel off me than these dogs.

Janet, by the way, thanks for the round mirror pins. Now I have too many ideas. LOL
Thanks for the link to Dahlia's new adventures. I hope all is well for her. She is missed indeed.

I've got to run the dishwasher after our bowls of tomato soup and grilled cheese.
Fred is watching "School of Rock" with Jack Black. He is in there chuckling away. He said: "Tina, this guy looks like Scotty." Yes Fred, I know. I've told you that before, many times.
He said: "I didn't believe you." Thanks Fred. (And no, I have not figured out my revenge for the not-so-funny joke about Skippy)

Kimmer, you are a good woman. There isn't a limit on the ability to love and how many lost souls you can hold in your heart.
    Sleep sweet, dear one.

Michelle, Liv just said: "mom, can we go all paleo?" After I make pickle juice fried chicken, sure.
