Tuesday's Tiny Titan

  • chuckieb 8 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! I wanted to share with you something I've been monitoring online for the last few days. When I was in Cambridge, UK I used to visit the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens and I follow them on both FB and Twitter. This past week they said that a super cool weird plant called the Tiny Titan Arum was about to bloom. What makes this special is that this plant only blooms approximately once every ten years and the flowering only lasts for two days. The part that tweaks my sense of humour and interest is the fact that this plant STINKS when it flowers. In fact, it's also known as the Corpse flower. It's a huge plant, 5'5" tall! The funniest comment I read was when a little kid said that the flower smelled like her "Nanna's house". Ouch. :) Here's a link if you want to read more:

    http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Flower/story-27440332-detail/story.html

Sun is out now but it rained this morning. Chance of thunderstorms still but I kind of doubt it. Not sure what's on my agenda today. I could weed the back interlock. Lord knows it needs it!
I have a craving for Chicken Parm so will probably do that up for dinner this evening.
    Chicken Parmigiano
Sorry to hear you had computer issues yesterday Tina. :( Hope the antibiotics fix Skippy up right away. Are the warts on her eye affecting her sight? My girlfriend's dog was diagnosed with lyme disease (ticks) and the medication cost A LOT! TOO FUNNY @ Lola growling at the Personal Injury Lawyers on TV. That's hilarious. Ugh on the Pool fix it estimate. Does Liv use the pool very often? Good luck to her deciding whether or not to accept a manager's position at the Toasted Monkey.
Re: my never ending Quinoa salad. It reminds me of the Bible story where Jesus fed a ton of people with five loaves of bread and two fish. My Quinoa salad could feed a nation. :)
I had to giggle when you mentioned coffee mate. Used to use that myself when I was in college. Bleck. Good Luck at your Dr.'s appointment today. Hope you like him/her.
Hope everyone else is doing well. Enjoy your day! Smell the flowers? :)

Morning! What a cool flower Janet....it even kinda looks like it's nickname, corp-ish, with that dark purple color! That is just too amazing :) Lol at the smelly Grandma's house, sometimes I just love how kids don't have filters :P

Aww..I'm sorry to hear about skippy and how expensive the meds. were. We had to get rid of Pickles because of his tick problem...we just couldn't get rid of them. We would take him for constant flea/tick baths and they would just keep on coming back. I have a feeling the field behind our house was infested with them? Anyway, we had to get rid of him because we kept finding ticks on the kids, Caiden was 8 months old and we even found one in between little toes. We even had to pull most of our carpet up because they were living in there and that's when we put our wood floor down. Ticks can live up to a year without feeding. Lol at Lola and her hate of certain commercials...that makes me chuckle :P

I made this for breakfast http://allrecipes.com/recipe/poached-eggs-caprese/detail.aspx but used this poached egg technique http://www.food.com/recipe/microwave-poached-eggs-118761 and it was really yummy! I do still need to perfect the microwave egg to get it down to the perfect amount of seconds, mine were slightly over done. Going to do some house work and then do some major school work with Caiden. I'm really trying to get him to be able to write his name before he starts school, but I just don't see it happening..boys are so much difficult to teach anything to than girls! Everything has moved at such a slower pace than Briauna with Caiden. He'll catch up though!

I tried out Garlic Shrimp and it was fantastic, I will review in the IMI soon. Tonight I think I'm going to pull out some deer sausage I picked up at the Farmers Market last week, but I have no clue what to serve with it. Probably just a big veggie stir fry since we leave in 2 days, and I need clean out my fridge! Hope everyone has a great day :)

    Hi all.

Tina, you are so lucky to have Skippy so long. 14 is a very old dog age! Most of ours were gone around 12, esp. the medium size dogs. Ticks are also bad here, and I have never had such a time fighting fleas before! Good luck on the Dr. appt. I can understand Olivia hesitating at changing jobs — the hours are longer for managers, and if she does really well with tips that would be a consideration.

LOL on the "stink week" type plant., Janet I think we can do without that one. We used to use Coffeemate until I read all labels and ran screaming from the kitchen (figuratively speaking). We use (ugh! - can't find raw) pasteurized heavy cream and stevia (it is the only safe sweetener around, but with the cream I don't always use it). Cream instead of milk because milk has sugars, which I didn't know - or care - until recently.

Michelle, I can identify with ticks and fleas - living in the country we track them in on our shoes, and pick off an occasional critter that has decided to attach itself, so even without a pet who goes outside, they arrive. We pulled up the carpet in the LR and have had fewer fleas until this year. I get paranoid and have sprinkled sevin dust inside the plastic mattress cover that we put on the hide-a-bed mattress, just to deter any six legged livestock. Ha ha! Kittens and cats are treated with Revolution -- it seems to be the only one that works, but even it doesn't seem to last as long as it has before. I will have to ask the vet for a solution. I have heard that diatomaceous earth is good to scatter around the doors and windows, but it is a mess if you use it inside. Our daughter uses it a lot.

Good luck with teaching Caiden. I'm sure he will learn to write his name before he is 21 - ha ha! I think the schools demand too much too soon, some kids just don't care at that age. It took our daughter forever to write her last name. She was in 2nd grade!

We picked wild blackberries. Well, Wayne went back into the brush and I skirted the front area bec. didn't have long sleeve shirt on. He was scratched pretty bad on his arm, but that is the price for the wild ones. We should have about three pints, enough to make a cobbler and / or coffee cakes and / or pie this winter. There are lots of red berries so a second trip is in planning stage maybe next week or later this week.

Grapes (concord) should be ripening soon - we like this one stand which has grape jelly, grapes, zucchini, raw local honey, you name it. They have some antiques but I hover around the jams and honeys and such and buy too much! I found a recipe for cucumber bread on AR, and may try it today in addition to freezing the berries.

Sun is out. Strange! It is hot but not as bad as the past week. I must go attack the berries and do some baking before I succumb to the need for a nap - LOL! Want to do something productive! Have a good day!

I remember watching the feature movie "Dennis the Menace" with Walter Matthau as Mr. Wilson. He was tending a Tiny Titan in his greenhouse. He was planning a huge party for the flower blooming and Dennis did his usual 'menace' act. So funny that you are following the plant, Janet. Chicken Parm sounds delicious. I have an Italian craving, myself.

Michelle, Kids do say the darndest things! LOL Good luck on the frig purge. That is awful about the tick infestation. I almost accidentally amputated on of Olivia's toes when she was only a few months old. Apparently, some of my sewing thread wound around two of her pudgy toes and it was hidden in the fat rolls. She was screaming in pain and Fred noticed her bright red toes. We had to use tweezers to unwind and cur away the thread. Boy, did I feel awful.

My Doctor's appt. was cancelled. She had an emergency call. I'm glad they called me and let me know. I would be 'ticked' if I drove there to be turned away.

I have dogs lounging everywhere. I have to dust. I'm cleaning out three pieces of furniture in Fred's room. The drawers are filled with knick-knacks and then I'll polish them with furniture oil, snap a pic and list them for sale. They are Ethan Allen solid wood and hopefully someone will want them. A six drawer chest of drawers, a two drawer night stand, a tall lingerie chest. My dining set matches these three pieces and I will sell it all if someone wants matching furniture. (Olivia is obsessed with matching furniture, while I prefer pieces collected over time and matching is boring.) I don't think I"ll be having many dinners to seat 10 and my dining room is so crowded.

It is cloudy today and I'm so sleepy. I had a picture in my bedroom fall off the wall last night and it crashed to the floor scaring me to pieces. There was broken glass everywhere and I had to sweep at 3:00 am so no dog got cut. Scotty joked it was Fred coming home and he knocked if off the wall. It was LOUD.

I'm hungry and since I don't have to fast anymore, time to find some food. A poached egg in the microwave has never been one of my stronger suits. I still like the old fashioned way.

Powdered coffee mate is an acquired taste. Dinner dinner, what's for dinner?

    Made
    Potato Chip Sandwich
for lunch and replicated the Watermelon Water that we had at the Asian Market Saturday. Oh my goodness it's delicious and refreshing AND HEALTHY! It's just basic but I followed this recipe and didn't even use the mint or lime slices

Wow at your breakfast Michelle. I think Jim would LOVE that. May have to try that out. I pinned it.We didn't put Benjamin in Jr. Kindergarten (age 4). I don't think he could write his name when he went into Grade 1. Hard to remember that long ago! :) I know the teacher was quite frustrated with how slow he was learning to read. He stayed for extra practice etc. In the end he became a voracious reader. I wouldn't fret about it or cause either of you stress over it. As you say, he'll get there in his own time and it'll all be okay.
I do remember the girls being such keeners and all colouring inside the lines, etc. Rolling eyes and gag me with a spoon. LOL! In their own time.....
That Garlic shrimp recipe looks amazing and the sausages sound most delicious.
Sevin is a banned insecticide where we are Karen. Diatomaceous earth is no problem though. Nice haul on the blackberries! I'm envious!
That's hilarious that the Dennis the Menace movie had the Titan Arum plant in it Tina. Too funn! :) I'm with you on the non matching furniture. Goodness on the picture falling off the room. That's a dangerous thing to happen at the best of times, never mind at 3 a.m.

Hmmm. Dinner? Wayne is here and leaving right away to bale for one of the Amish. He will be hungry but hot and tired so I should fix something substantial but cool. We have kielbasa in the refrigerator and can fix it quickly. No idea when he will be back.

Bread smells good. Best go check. See you later.

    Oh, my aching back! LOL!

Made two cucumber bread loaves (http://allrecipes.com/recipe/cucumber-nut-bread/detail.aspx) then after I took it out of the oven, got industrious and made a loaf of banana bread, loaf of zucchini bread, and 8 zucchini muffins, all of them are in the oven with different times, of course. I ran out of sugar or would have made a few more loaves to freeze.

Tried to relax in sun room but a wasp kept dive bombing me and I gave up, capitulated, surrendered, ran for my life, laptop and glass of H2O in hand. Water slopped over the edge, narrowly missed my laptop. Two kittens gave me the evil eye when I tried to move them OUT of my chair so I boosted them out, and water splashed precariously close to the laptop AGAIN. Mauser and Mel were back in the chair in two seconds, both wanting to stretch on the keyboard. Mel left. Mauser gave up after the second try.

HI janet. We either SP'd or I missed your post or ??? The watermelon water does sound good. I am working on a glass of lemon water in between popping Trouble off of my laptop and away from the screen. She is back for the third time. I give up. Surprised Sevin is not permitted for insecticide use there. But as we go along, more of the old stuff (and new!) is discovered to have BAD things happen when we use it.

Tina - great minds run in the same channel. Pieroges and whatever else I can fix quickly will probably be supper tonight.

I'm sure Wayne will be appreciative of all your baking endeavours when he gets home Karen!
Got a fair amount accomplished today. Weeded the back interlock, a flower bed and trimmed my Bleeding hearts as they're starting to turn yellow and die. My hosta are in bloom and some pretty orange lilies in the front garden. Ran in town. Jim got his haircut and we ran some errands. Chicken Parm is in the oven. boy is it every gonna hit the spot. Have a lovely evening ladies.

What made me think I could move a bed? Dumb move. Got bedding in the washer.
I have dogs using my feet as pillows. Karen, you have rampaging kittens and I have velcro dogs. They are going to make me trip.

Brunswick stew is a country melange of veggies, corn, tomatoes, onions, chicken with an almost bbq flavor broth. I made a ton of it and froze it. Last bowl from freezer.

    Orange lilies sound pretty.

Hi again. Wayne called for me pick up baling twine since he ran out in mid field--they had more hay to bale. It is late and I am sitting in the car waiting so I can follow him home. The little Amish kids are playing on the buggy and I can pick out a few German words here and there. Their mama evidently told one of them to fill the water bucket and that it was empty. They are so cute. Evidently she told them to quiet down since the volume has decreased a bit. They speak a dialect that is between German and Swiss. I understand only a little German and NO Swiss.

I hear the baler so it must be working using the twine..I hope. Orschelns did not have the kind he prefers. Crossing fingers the sisal works. When they brought up the hay one of the boys, about ten or eleven years old, came over get the twine. I could hardly lift it but he had no problems.

It is so pretty out here. They do not use electricity so it will really be dark shortly. Glad there is 4G. Take care and enjoy the chicken parm.
