Wet Wednesday.....

  • chuckieb 7 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! It is a very gray, dreary, drippy Wednesday here in Ottawa. It's supposed to go up to 5C/41F this afternoon and tomorrow so may be my only opportunity to pull the plants out of my flower barrels and planters before they freeze in there again. The majority of them I re-decorate with tree boughs and Christmassy things. I'd like to get the house decorated for Christmas both inside and out and our tree up this weekend.

    Am going to make
    Korean Flank Steak
with asparagus on the side for dinner this evening.

I may take a trip into town this afternoon and do some Christmas/holiday shopping.

    Wishing everyone a wonderful day!

Morning Janet! "Up to 41F?" Lol, it's chilly here today and it's only 62F, even though it does feel colder. Kids are in long sleeves and jackets :) Good luck getting everything done before it freezes. Yum on your dinner, I haven't bough flank steak in forever, but when or if it ever goes on sale, I want to make that recipe :)

Not too much going on here today. Will head to the gym in a bit. Drinking my favorite smoothie right now and need one more cup of coffee before I can get moving. Michael did end up having to work last night and will tonight as well :( Bri has theater practice until 6 so I will have to work out dinner around that. She still doesn't know what her part is, or if the JH kids even get a "part". The play is called "High School Musical" you know, from the movie? I'll fill y'all in a little more when I find out more :)

    Have a great day everyone!!

Yes, it is a dreary day, Janet, however, as you say it might be a good idea to clean your barrels and containers out before it freezes. Have fun Christmas shopping and enjoy your dinner tonight as well.

Gee it sounds like you are in for a busy day, again, Michelle. Very cool on the kids doing the play "High School Musical". I haven't seen it but I am sure the kids will do a good job of it!

Nothing much happening here as usual. I have a bit of cleaning to do and at the moment I am not sure what we are having for dinner. I have some apples to use up so I may make an apple pie or apple crisp with them. I am still wading through some recipes trying to decide what to make. Den doesn't like things with a bunch of cinnamon in it so whatever I make I will reduce the amount of it quite a bit.

    Wishing everyone a great day!

What's in your favourite smoothie Michelle? Good Luck with dinner and Bri's theatre practice. I've heard of "High School Musical" but never seen it.

Morning Joce! Good luck with your cleaning. Jim's cleaning out the pellet stove this morning which is a nasty job. Making an apple pie on a day like today sounds like the perfect thing to do. I love cinnamon and usually boost the amount in recipe. :)

    Good Morning!

Yum on the Korean steak Janet! I'd like to get our tree up this weekend too. I noticed many of our neighbours had their tree up in the window and yards decorated on Sunday. I guess some wanted it done on the weekend before the 1st ;) Have fun decorating and shopping! :D

Hi Michelle, enjoy the gym today! That's a cool musical to do at school, fun! I'm thinking of themes to nominate for December's recipe challenge in IMI. I was thinking, what if we did a separate "Cookie/Candy" challenge or cookie swap type thing for the month? I know some people don't bake, so I thought doing it separately from the regular monthly challenge might be nice? Just thought I'd run it by you and see what you think. :)

Hi Joce. I'm in the same boat as you, not much happening. I've been craving apple desserts this week and just got a 5lb bag of apples! I'm thinking of apple hand pies in a puff pastry crust, apple crisp with an oat crumble or this with apples instead of pears,Maple Pear Tarte Tatin

It's -7C (19F) here!! It feels so much colder because it's a wet/damp cold so it feels more like -20C in our regular dry winter. Or I'm just getting thinner skin, lol. My ears are still thawing after being outside for 5 minutes a 1/2 hour ago ;)
I took some ground beef out of the freezer to make this again, Bulgogi Inspired Beef Burgers. This time I'm going to bake them like mini meatloaves and baste them with a hoisin/ketchup glaze and serve with a salad or maybe in lettuce wraps with shredded carrots and thinly sliced cucumbers etc..
I need to do some online shopping today, order the knobs and LED wire we need etc..And probably browse Indigo online and order some presents for the kids. I might brave the stores later this week, but it's so incredibly nuts here in the stores and I'm not a crowd person! I did buy Sophia a ton of stuff when Pete and I went shopping, so I don't really need much except stocking stuffers and something for Pete's Mom. We don't buy gifts for each other usually, especially this year since the kitchen is our b-day/Christmas present! ;) Next year it will be appliances for our yearly gift to each other, LOL ;)

    Have a great day everyone!

You're making me hungry with all your baking cookies, candy, tatin talk Shona! :) That Pear recipe of yours looks SO good! I always think we feel colder at the beginning of winter when we haven't yet acclimatized to the freezing temperatures Shona. :) And then once we've been immersed in them for a while it doesn't feels so bad. :) Your Bulgogi burgers turned lettuce wrap idea sounds fabulous.

Hi Joce! I just made an apple pie recipe for Thanksgiving..it was delicious! When I get home I'll post the link, I can't get it to open here.

Janet for my smoothie I do a banana, a scoop of almond butter, almond milk and a some cocao nibs. I like a few pieces of pineapple too if I have it on hand.

We have ton of houses in our neighborhood with lights up already Shona. We are doing it all tomorrow. May have Michael help me pull it all out of the attic today after he wakes up though just to make things easier tomorrow. I have also been thinking of December themes. I have a couple ideas but they involve baking. I like the cookies idea and maybe even having it separate. I guess we can see what everyone thinks. I will start a post tomorrow :) yum on your dinner, sounds delicious! Lucky you on almost being done with Christmas shopping. Still haven't started ours :/

Good morning Joce, Janet, Shona, Michelle.

My humble opinion is that if you want to do a cookie exchange then go for it! Those who bake can submit recipes and those who don't want to don't have to. I don't have any special Christmas themed cookie recipes but it is fun to see what others make. Yum on the Bulgogi inspired wrap!

Since only one neighbor sees our lights we generally don't bother esp. now that the GS are either grown or not really into lights / decorations. I like to decorate inside but not as much as we did.

Hope the school play goes well and Bri gets a part. Have not seen that one but have hea d of it. You are, as usual, a very busy woman, Michelle. Good luck putting up the outside lights. Would love to see a pix of your house all decorated for the season.

The crew is here putting up the building for the RV. Or at least the footings for the foundation. I have avoided watching any of the work. Keep imagining all sorts of disasters that could happen. Ha ha!

Trouble gets on my lap, hears the machines clanging, and growls. She is on the half wall staring outside at the moment. It was 35F this morning so Mel lasted 25 minutes before coming back inside, Trouble about the same, and A.C. is still outside, laying in the sun on the porch. Of course, he is well padded!

We bought Fritz a coat for freezing winter outings yesterday. The clerk also works at their kennel where we board him and recognized his name.. She said how sweet he was, and such a good dog! She plays with him in her spare time at the kennels! A young couple was there with a tiny six week old puppy, picking out a little coat. It will be one spoiled dog!

Have to take GS swimming....he may have a private lesson to work on his stroke so he doesn't hurt his arm again by doing it wrong. It will be LATE tonight by the time we get home and if the guys are still working Wayne has to stay here. Boo!

Saw the neighbor pup yesterday, he is getting around just a bit stiff. Guess it pays to slow down when we drive by.

Silly GR told me I had not joined O.D.D. again, grrr! It had logged me out also. If it keeps this up I will have to have a second account! Fortunately it recognized the screen name and password when I logged in. Sigh! Technology!

Best scoot. Wayne and his buddy will want lunch. I threw together some sort of homemade tomato soup and egg salad sandwiches. Their are three other guys but they bring their own launch...which was good since I am down to zippo .... zilch .... nothing in the cupboards and one loaf of bread. Guess it is time to shop at the commissary.

Have a nice day! Hi to everyone!

Your right Karen, I will just start a cookie recipe swap in the IMI and whoever wants to join in can! I say anyone who want's to play can leave links to any cookie recipes they want to share and other's can "pick them up" and make them :) I only have 1 or 2 cookie recipes, but I would love to get some new recipes and try them out. Cool that they got started on your RV building, I can only imagine the amount of noise they are creating :P Good luck to your GS and his private swim lessons.

Here is the link to the apple pie Joce:

It was very easy to throw together :)

That smoothie combo sounds wonderful Michelle!

Hope your GS makes out well at his lesson Karen and that the RV building goes up without a hitch. Glad to hear the puppy is going to be okay! I need to think of making lunch shortly myself and I have not a clue!!!!

Well I got all my planters emptied so they are set to fill with tree boughs soon. It's very wet out there otherwise I might contemplate filling them today. Poor Jim is still working on the pellet stove. His hands are jet black.

    Good afternoon everyone.
I'm feeling so behind with all of this talk about Christmas, I've have nothing started and no idea's this year.
Your Korean steak sounds wonderful Janet.
You are one busy person Michelle.
Nothing much going on here either Joce. I have some cleaning to do as well.
I agree with Karen, those that want to join can do so and they rest can drool.
I'm making pasta and Italian Meatballs for dinner. Our daughter will be joining us and this is one of her favourites.
I'll pop back later if I can.

    Good Afternoon Everyone!!

It's a dreary overcast day here too and we had some drizzle but it's 80(f) something degrees.

Flank steak recipe looks great Janet. Growing up my mom always bought flank steak because it was cheap, I don't know when it happened but flank steak ain't so cheap anymore. Hope you get your planters straightened out before they freeze again.

Don't you just love cocoa nibs Michelle. It took me a bit to get use to them but now I prefer them to chocolate chips in some recipes, I think it balances the "over" sweet.
High School Musical will be great. I hope DD gets a part she wants.

I too have been craving something apple Joce but not something too sweet. After consuming the rest of the left over pumpkin pie my pants are a little tight.

Bulgogi mini meatloaves sound yummy Shona. I too need to do some on-line shopping. I don't have much to do. I always send my friend in PA something and do that on-line and think I will buy her a diffuser like the one I have.

That's good to hear the puppy is doing better Karen. And nice you got Fritz a coat. LD sleeps in a nightshirt when it's colder in addition to wearing his coat if he's outside. Gotta take care of the pups!

Meatballs and pasta too sound good Bren. I love making extra meatballs and then making pizza homemade with them or sub sandwiches for another time.

When you all are putting up your Christmas decorations and baking please dedicate a cookie or decoration to me. I will not be decorating or baking this year and instead will be packing everything up :( I so love Christmas and how magical everything looks. I keep thinking after I move I'm putting up a tree then and leaving it up for the rest of the year to make up for missing it this year.
Today we went to Lowes to look at the appliances we need to buy. Came home then called the Lowes where we will be moving to and ordered the Fridge, Washer, and Dryer and scheduled delivery for January 9. DH is working on the cable and internet service to be turned on. He needs to conclude the provider and packages. After Lowes we went to Walmart and bought some bins, just need to get the bubblewrap from the storage unit and bring that back home. Will probably have to get more bins but we have enough to get started.
    Fun - Fun - Fun!

I went a little overboard and I think I finished my Christmas shopping already, lol. I pre-ordered some books for Colter as some of the series he's reading haven't come out yet. But it should arrive by Dec.20-23rd--so cutting it close there! Sophia wrote out a list, so that was easy to pick out. I just have to use the Best Buy card Pete has on him-to get Colter his PC Gaming Headphones and I'm pretty much done. I'm usually last minute with Christmas! Last year I didn't order online in time for shipping so I had to go to the stores--I was determined to not do that again. Everything in the city sells out in-stores so I can never find anything the kids need or want. Christmas is stressful for me so I'm glad to have the shopping done so I can focus on food and such since I'm entertaining my MIL for a week, and possibly my brother too!

I love Dutch apple pie! The one I make has sour cream in the filling, mmm, might have to make that today! :D
I like the cookie swap idea!

Aw, cute on the little coat for Fritz! I try and get Jersey to wear a coat or sweater in the Winter time, but I think she feels embarrassed when she's at the park with it. ;) Glad to hear the puppy is doing better. Hopefully you do not get locked out of GR!

Hi Bren, yum on Meatballs! Enjoy your family dinner tonight! :)

Oh no, is the pellet stove not working Janet?

It's lunch time and I'm just eating my breakfast, I've been on the computer all morning so I best be off! Ciao <3

Well I broke in the "jerky gun" today. I had take out 4 BLSL Chix breast to thaw the other day so today was the day to make the dog his jerky treats because tomorrow we are again busy with stuff and I need between 4-6 hours for the things to dry in the dehydrator.
Using the food processor to grind up the chicken worked well. About 1/4 of the batch I processed some frozen blueberries and added them to that portion of ground chicken to see if LD will like them. The jerky gun was easy to use but because DH had to buy the BIG one I had to take breaks holding it because my wrist started to hurt. I knew I should have gotten the smaller one. Anyhow, they are in the dehydrator now and my little taste tester will let me know later what he thinks.

That'd be tough alright Linda, not getting to put a tree up or do any Christmas baking this year. :( I wouldn't be able to go zero Christmas myself. I'd HAVE to do some little thing. Very fun on appliance shopping today! Will you rent a moving truck and do it all yourselves or hire someone? Very fun on the Jerky gun and the dehydrator. I'm sure LD will be thrilled.

LOL Shona @ going overboard. I think that happens at Christmas doesn't it! :) Congrats on being all finished your Christmas shopping. Wise under the circumstances when you have company coming and still want to get your kitchen finished off. The pellet stove is working tickety-boo Shona but it needs a super deep clean at least once a year and it was due. Jim has to totally strip it down and it's a messy job as the ash is fine, fine, fine.

Did a bit of errand running. Jim's cousin, wife and two girls are coming to visit in a couple of weekends so I went to the Dollar store and got a few little craft things and metallic tattoos (LOL) to put in the closet so they have something to play with while they're here.

Christmas shopping has not been on my mind so I am way behind. GS has tooth hurting him so picked up qtips to apply the Orlagel his mom sent with. He saw a blue light saver Star Wars thingy so it may be a nice stocking stuffer. If they still have it when he is not with me. Ho ho.

The footing for the foundation is poured. The guys put deer corn out, it is legal until ten days before season opens again then must be removed....the deer will have eaten it long before.

Feral hogs were seen at the top of J Highway....hope they stay there. G,a is anxious to go swimming so must he moving. He has 45 more minutes before he can even go in the pool area so I am in no rush. See you later.

As festive as I'll get this year will be to keep the Hallmark channels on as they are playing all the Christmas stories. There was so much I wanted to do for the holiday but ... oh well.
We have a professional moving company moving us. Our furniture is way too big and even if friends were to help it never works out.
Nice that the pellet stove is all cleaned out. I'm sure it'll be running a lot in the next few months. Cute on crafty things for the girls.

Hope GS tooth is nothing serious Karen. Does he know why it's hurting? Good news the foundation is poured for the RV enclosure. We have wild boar here ... do you hope the feral hogs stay where they are at so you know where to hunt or because of the havoc they cause if they were to get close to where you live?

Hi everyone. I survived the day alone at work lol. Is it bad that I listened to my book on audible in the background while I was doing some mindless tasks.
We just had leftovers for dinner. I had chicken tortellini soup that had to be eaten. I made it Sunday so it was eat or toss. Becca and I had that and frank had leftover stuffed peppers.
I really want to make stuffed artichokes but I haven't been able to find any artichokes. There was none at the supermarket the last two times and the other markets are either way too expensive or look all withered.
I have most of my Christmas shoppping done. Frank and I are just doing one small thing to open. Still have to get that. And then I have my mom, who either tells me and my sister she wants the same thing or doesn't tell me at all. She wants a new pocketbook for Florida but only winterish ones are out.

That's great that the footing has been poured Karen. Ouch on your Grandson's toothache. They're the worst! :( Yikes on the hogs although I would like to see one.

That's good you'll hire a company to move you Linda. It's a HUGE job! I love Christmas movies too and have been PVR'ing them like crazy recently. We watched one just the other night called "Roof top Christmas Tree". It was actually filmed in Almonte which is less than a 30 min. drive from where we live and we go there a lot. It was SO much fun to be able to identify streets and stores, buildings and even the interior of the museum which in the movie they pretend is the entrance to lawyer's offices. :)

Chicken tortellini soup sounds excellent Laurie. Do you guys find it weird that Rachel isn't there? I remember when Benjamin went to live at residence his second year at University the house seemed SO quiet and we'd be down right despondent when we walked by his empty room. LOL. Go you on having the majority of your christmas shopping done already.

Linda, glad to hear the meat grinding worked out! That jerky gun is some gadget, how cool! I hope LD likes the jerky. :)

Yay Laurie, you survived work alone! :D Hopefully you can find some good artichokes. There are some frozen brands that sell the half intact artichokes. Might be worth a look. :)

That's good the pellet stove just needed a clean! How cool about the movie and seeing things you recognized...that's always fun. :) Haha, never seen a dill pickle martini!

We have wild boar here too. There's a Province wide Bounty on them to control the population as they destroy crops etc..Many counties have banned people from raising them. We have a farm down the road that raises them for hunting, he has them fenced in on a well treed acreage. But our county is trying to ban them here too. It's too bad since the farm here started as a program for War Vet's. I'm surprised they acclimated so well to our winter's here, they grow a lot of hair! ;)
