The best service I have ever had was at a little bitty home town restaurant that used to be close to where I live. The people there were so nice and sweet. There was only one cook and his wife was the waitress. They would see us getting out of our car and would come help with the door. Always a friendly greeting and prompt service and the BEST food I have ever tasted at a restaurant. They were just good ole country folks!!

Living just across the border from Mexico we eat out there often. I know the service will be great, and the food wonderful. You get a real table cloth, real napkins and a waiter who treats you like a king and queen! Your glass is never empty.. Makes you wonder why we can not get that same great service on this side of the border.. Over there they make little money and depend on the tips.. so they want you to be happy... On this side, they could care less if they wait on you..

That is the way they do at the little restaurant I was talking about, are you sure you just didn't cross into the Tennessee, or should I say Dixie instead of Mexico? LOL

We were at a Cracker Barrel on our way to North Carolina for vacation and it was packed to the door frame. It took a bit of navigating to get Ty's wheel chair positioned so his back was against a wall and he could look out at the people instead of facing a wall. And mind you, he was a normal growing boy on the inside, just with a body that didn't work, and he was 14 and a few months now. The waitress was bringing the sweet tea to the table next to us and my precious son, ummm, not so delicately patted her on the rear. She whipped around ready to snap something to him and she looked him in the eyes and said, "Poor boy, he didn't mean it." and the rest of us cracked up and said, "He surely did, ma'am!" I marvelled that she didn't dump the drinks on the table and she was a hoot with us. We had the best time and she made sure that Tyler got the best of the best that night. He ate like a king and was flirting up a storm and she went right along with it. Bless her heart. (Tyler couldn't talk and used a computer to communicate and she took her time waiting for him to order his food, it could take a few minutes for him to compose his list,) She was incredibly patient and she didn't mind the pat on the butt afterall. I will always remember her with kindness.

Isn't it wonderful to encounter someone with a huge heart and kindness? I'll bet Tyler had a fabulous time flirting and being made to feel a valued part of the crowd and a hottie, too. Sometimes it is the seemingly smallest things and efforts that stay in the minds of others long after the moment.
I am now a fan of that waitress.

Gem, don't be such a snob. I've been to many lovely and "Fancy schmancy" places and had we mere mortals treated and served as well as the celebrities at the next table. Good training and a boss who demands professional standards are what it takes.

I have to say that most of the "small town" cafes and diners often DO have some of the friendliest and most attentive servers - it's not always true, but they often seem to have more time for their customers. In Chicago, it's often a case of "hurry up and vacate your table so I can get on with the next customer/tip"...and I understand that servers make most of their wages from tips, so I don't begrudge them that need to keep filling the tables with new customers. All I ask for is a servier that looks me in the eye, remembers the special requests I have, and keeps a smile on his/her face, even when my husband is being testy!!!! I'll never forget the waitress that patiently waited for my husband to explain to her how exactly he wanted his hamburger - how to cook it, how to bring the onion slice, how to prepare the bun, what condiments he wanted and DIDN'T want...when he was through, (we were sitting in a booth), she pushed him into the booth so she could sit down next to him, looked him in the eye, and said "You're a picky fella, aren't you?" My young daughters looked at their father, eyes opened wide in amazement, wondering how their father would react to such a remark...he looked at the waitress with his eyebrows furrowed, then a look of bewilderment, and finally, he burst out laughing, as did the rest of us...that waitress got a big tip that day!!!!

Excuse me Borinda but I am not being a snob. Why are you jumping my case. I was only kidding as that is why I said I sound a little predjudice. LOL...which means Laugh out loud...which means I was LAUGHING!!! I am NOT snobby at all. I think krumkake hit the nail on the head with her comment. Common sense has a whole lot to do with the way a server acts also, not just good training and a demanding boss. By the way krumkake I loved that whole comment. That waitress seemed to be really super nice. I think it makes a meal even better when you have a really nice waitress. I bet your hubby was a wee bit surprised though wasn't he.hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

When we took Tyler out, it was always an adventure to find a food that he could eat with his swallowing difficulties. The kid was sick to death of mashed potatoes and gravy and a great deal of the time it was hard to find something I could mash or try to puree.
We decided to try the new Carrabbas and give it a whirl. I was thinking it was along the same lines of Olive Garden and didn't expect so many grilled items, I was really expecting more cheesy stuff that I could spoon the filling out for Ty. I was contemplating the menu so long the wait staff asked what the trouble was? Bless his heart, he went back to the line cooks and they made an awesome meal for Tyler. He sauteed some finely chopped spinach in garlic oil and then creamed it with some blended ricotta and other magic. He poached a meat ball in broth so that is was fork tender and easily mashed. And the piece de resistance, he melted chocolate and drizzled it over a puddle of cannoli filling. They plated it like a masterpiece and my dearest son had the best looking meal. He ate every bite, loving all of it. My heart swelled with gratitiude that some one took the time to be so creative with a corporate menu for a boy with special needs. They did go beyond the call of duty.

Itis just great that some people can be so sweet when it comes to problems like that. NYM can I be nosy and ask what was wrong with Ty? If you don't want to tell me I will understand and please forgive me for asking. :o)
