Apron Strings News

I make & sell vintage styled aprons in Missouri. Would like to hear from those who also make, collect, enjoy them.
I also collect stories about aprons. Lots of fascinating accounts I've gleaned at events in Hermann, MO.

That sounds so neat! I can remember my grandma always wore a full apron whenever I went to her house. And don't forget the duster or house-dress. So many memories of grandma and her apron. I grew up in Kansas City, KS I still have relatives in KCK and all over the country. My dad was 1 of eleven kids.

I actually have been trying to find my last 'authentic' typed apron, I am missing having and using one. There has got to be sewing patterns for them - anyone have a link to one?

hey lunchboxer - have you a website? I would be happy to check it out...

Mom had great collection of very dressy aprons and some very practical ones. My sister and I often would play "restaurant" for family dinners and we would use them. We even loved having matching ones that we would wear and pass around the trays hor's d'oervres at Mom's big dinners (rumaki, sausage wontons, deviled eggs). Dad#2 entertained a lot of people during spring training time and the house was always full of ball players and their wives. It wasn't until the early 70's that we stopped wearing the aprons. I make a bet if I go back to mom's kitchen, I could open the second drawer from the left of the refrigerator and underneath the bread napkins, there will be a few of her chiffon aprons.

Sure does bring back a lot of memories. I can still picture my Mama and Grandma wearing their aprons. They made most of theirs. I remember that's what I chose to make for my first Home Ec sewing project. I still have all those aprons; boxed up........I think I'll dig them out.

Well, here I am, so happy to see so many have joined this apron group. Your stories are marvelous!! Funny how an apron can 'unleash' so many memories, mostly good ones.
One of my favorite stories collected was not even shared. Two couples were looking at my aprons display at Christmas in Hermann, MO. I asked one of the men if he had any memories he'd like to share about aprons. He looked down, said "no", but a lady with him urged him to share "that apron story" with me. He again stated he didn't have a story, somewhat embarrassed that she would bring it up. She tried to get him to write it down on my message pad, but he wouldn't do it. Now, what do you think it was all about? We'll never know, but it sure sounded like a great story, don't you think? If you're out there somewhere, you'll know who you are........!?
So keep your stories and memories coming. I love them!
If you're interested in seeing some of the aprons I make, let me know and I can email them to you. I just haven't gotten up the courage to start a website yet. The apron on the group page is one that many folks have said reminds them of Lucille Ball. It's the Diner Waitress apron that doesn't have pockets. The dress uniform had the pockets, the apron finished the look. They come in salmon/white or dusty green/white. Anywayz, you've all made this so much fun. You're the best!!

I started to use aprons again awhile ago.........they are back in vogue now, too!

McCalls and Simplicity still have patterns for aprons and I'm sure other books do as well. My sister has made a couple of mine and I've ordered thwm with my husband's business name and logo and given them away at Christmas.

Right now I'm looking for an apron pattern that would allow me to put my arms through the straps rather than over my head (I like aprons to cover my shirt), The regular ones pull on my very arthritic neck and back and I'm hurting by the time I'm finished what I'm doing!

Great idea, lunchboxer! BTW, are you selling on EBay?

I'm not selling on the net as of yet. still kinda uncertain about doing that. The type you're describing sounds like a smock (they have sleeves), but I do have several styles that might suit your needs. Let me know if you want pix sent.

You should definitely sell online, hand made aprons.....heck yeah! Aprons are very in right now. EBays easy.....customer pays shpping....use PayPal for payment...piece of cake!

No, don't want sleeves........the apron's I'm looking for have the same kind of strap, but it doesn't go around the neck. Tour arms go through the straps and the straps go through loops on the sides of the apron at the waist and then you tie them in the back.

Okay, senior moment--no, senior MONTH-- now i remember that one! I did make one like that. It looks tricky to get into but is very convenient.
bty: i checked out ebay's 38-page tutorial on setting up an account and it was a bit overwhelming. I still want to do it, tho. Now to just find a genius to assist me..............
