I've eaten in many excellent restaurants, but if I knew I were going to die tomorrow, I would drive to Chicago to eat one more meal at Frontera. Frontera is upstairs; Topolobampo is downstairs. Frontera is fairly noisy and informal, and Topolobampo is quiet, more a formal dining area. You should make reservations 2 weeks in advance to eat at Topolobampo. You don't need reservations for Frontera, but unless you go at an odd time, you'll likely wait an hour or so. It's well worth it. Food just don't get better than this.

I know that this will be a controversial statement, and I really like this place, but, for the price, there is better Mexican food to be had in Chicago.

Rick Bayless, head chef and owner, is very creative, but the experiments don't always work out. My Tamal Azteca was bland despite the cheese and cuitlacoche (mexican corn fungus/mushroom) that should have made it very rich and tasty. Don't bother with the mole, go for the meat. High quality ingredients and invention are the strengths rather than the execution of to-die-for-dishes.
