How to make it

  • In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients.
  • By hand work in butter until the mixture resembles fine bread crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, best eggs until frothy.
  • Stir in buttermilk.
  • Make a large well in the center of the dry ingredients and gradually add the egg mixture, mixing by hand until a stiff dough is formed.
  • Turn out on floured board and knead thoroughly.
  • Divide dough in half and shape into two round balls.
  • Flatten tops slightly and with a sharp knife cut an X about an inch deep.
  • Put loaves on oiled baking sheet and bake in a 375 degree oven for 45 to 50 minutes.
  • Should be brown and baked through.
  • Cool before cutting into slices.

    My Mother always made Irish Brown bread but I don't think this was the recipe she used. I am so glad you shared this with us as I do not have many recipes from my Mother.
