Civil War Mashed Potatoes Recipe
CIVIL WAR MASHED POTATOES This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Ritchie Estate in Arlington, Texas in 1984.

Ingredients
  • 1 quart potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons sweet cream

Directions
  1. Peel and grate fine uncooked potatoes.
  2. Put water, butter, salt and pepper in frying pan until it becomes hot then stir in potatoes.
  3. Let them cook slowly so as not to burn and stir often but do not mash.
  4. Remove from fire and stir in sweet cream.
