Ingredients

How to make it

  • Give a nutty flavor to cereals and cookies by using toasted rolled oats. To toast oats, just spread the oats in a shallow layer in a baking pan.
  • Then bake in a 350 degrees F oven for 15 to 20 minutes or till lightly browned, stirring occasionally. Cool. Store tightly covered.
  • Try this idea with millet, rye berries, and other grains, too.

I love granola, but now I live in a humid area and what having trouble finding or making a recipe that wasn't uber-sticky at the end. Now I just toast my oats pre-stovetop cooking of the granola, and it's great! My husband and I both love the granola I make from this stuff - I make it twice a week and we eat in as cereal, parfait, on yogurt, in the hand like a trail mix, etc!!

Hey! I think I figured out the problem - it's a new oven with a really, REALLY low rack so I probably had them way to close to the heating element. I tried again, but moved them up, and they were great... a great solution to my current problem with stovetop granolas coming out too gooey, because when I used toasted instead of raw oats, they ended up with a great crunch!
And, if anyone makes my mistake and they come out looking burned, just throw them in a stovetop granola recipe - it turned out super with no burnt taste at all!

Hmm... how shallow is shallow?... most of mine were burnt when I checked at 10 minutes, and they all had that kind of burnt flavor to them.

Toasting oats -- steel-cut as well as rolled -- is a surefire and healthy way to give them awesome flavor! I hadn't though of using toasted oats in cookies though. I will next time though!! Thanks for the great suggestion!
