How to make it

  • Disslove yeast in warm water
  • Add egg, milk, butter, sugar, lemon peel, salt and 3/4 cup flour
  • Beat till smooth
  • Stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft ( sticky dough )
  • Turn onto floured surface
  • with floured hands knead smooth and elastic about 6 to 8 minutes
  • Press into a greased 8 inch square pan, building up edges slightly
  • For topping:
  • combine cream cheese and sugar
  • Gently spread over dough
  • Arrange on apple slices, brush with butter
  • Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled
  • Bake in a 350F oven 30 to 40 minutes or top is golden and apples tender
  • Note: may also use peaches, plums or apricots instead of apples
  • Cool on rack
  • Dust with powdered sugar
  • Refrigerate leftovers
