How to make it

  • Saute onion in oil in skillet. Stir in flour, salt and pepper. Add water.
  • Cook until thickened, stirring constantly. Layer okra, white sauce, tomatoes and cheese in a lightly greased baking dish.
  • Bake at 325-350 degrees for 35 minutes.
  • This recipe comes from a book published in 1954. "Jessie's Book of Creole and Deep South Recipes" by Edith and John Watts is a fine heirloom collection of authentic Gulf Coast cookery.

    Hi I remember this one I made to back in 1960. I don't remember who gave me this recipe but it's good. I also lost the recipe a year later and have not made it again. Good retrival and post Hi5.
