Country music hall of famer Mel Tillis own daddy old recipes! Mel said the spice is the beer! Mel also has a cookbook out!

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cup beer

Directions
  1. 1. Cream shortening, add sugars gradually, blending thoroughly.
  2. 2. Add eggs, beat thoroughly.
  3. 3. Mix and sift dry ingredients. Add to creamed mixture alternately with beer, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  4. 4. Turn into greased 8x8x2" pan. Bake in moderate oven, 40-45 minutes. Cool, slice, enjoy!
