Ingredients

How to make it

  • Over medium heat, add oil to heat.
  • Add onions, salt and pepper.
  • Cook, stirring occasionally
  • After 10 minutes add sugar and stir to combine
  • Cook another 15-20 minutes until onions are caramelized
  • Add garlic and cook for a minute
  • Add wine or sherry, thyme and bay leaf
  • Stir to combine
  • Add beef broth, stir to combine
  • Cover pan partially and simmer for half an hour
  • Season with salt and pepper
  • Remove bay leaf
  • Ladle soup into ovenproof soup bowls
  • Top each one with toasted croutons
  • Sprinkle gruyere top of croutons
  • Bake in oven at 400 until cheese is bubbling and melted

    Mmmm....looks wonderful! I have been wanting to make french onion soup recently, but it has just been so darn hot here! Once it cools off, I might have to give your recipe a try :)
