Steelers Sausage Sandwich

- 2 large onions, sliced top to bottom in thin slices shopping list
- 2 large green peppers, sliced lengthwise (optional) shopping list
- 3-4 tablespoons olive oil shopping list
- kosher salt and fresh black pepper to taste shopping list
- 2 jar tomato basil pasta sauce shopping list
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes shopping list
- 1/2 cup red grape fruit juice shopping list
- 1 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped shopping list
- 1 1/2 pounds Italian sausages, blanched shopping list
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter shopping list
- 1 cup asiago cheese, grated shopping list
- 6 crusty Italian sandwich rolls shopping list
How to make it
- In a bowl, toss the onion slices and peppers with olive oil.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Slowly cook the onions and peppers in a heavy skillet until they carmelize.
- Sauce:
- In a saucepan, heat the tomato basil sauce with the red pepper flakes, grape juice, pepper and basil.
- Heat until the mixture becomes slightly thickened and hot.
- While the sauce is cooking, grill the sausages until browned and heated through.
- Split the rolls.
- Spread 1 teaspoon of butter on each roll and toast them under a broiler or on the grill.
- Place the sausages on the toasted rolls and top with sauce, onions, peppers and cheese.
- Serve open-faced.
