Steelers Sausage Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients

2 large onions, sliced top to bottom in thin slices

2 large green peppers, sliced lengthwise (optional)

3-4 tablespoons olive oil

Kosher salt and fresh black pepper to taste

2 jar tomato basil pasta sauce

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1/2 cup red grape fruit juice

1 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped

1 1/2 pounds Italian sausages, blanched

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 cup Asiago cheese, grated

6 crusty Italian sandwich rolls

Directions

In a bowl, toss the onion slices and peppers with olive oil.

Season with salt and pepper.

Slowly cook the onions and peppers in a heavy skillet until they carmelize.

Sauce:

In a saucepan, heat the tomato basil sauce with the red pepper flakes, grape juice, pepper and basil.

Heat until the mixture becomes slightly thickened and hot.

While the sauce is cooking, grill the sausages until browned and heated through.

Split the rolls.

Spread 1 teaspoon of butter on each roll and toast them under a broiler or on the grill.

Place the sausages on the toasted rolls and top with sauce, onions, peppers and cheese.

Serve open-faced.
