Whole wheat flour can be substituted without harming the recipe. I replace the shortening cup for cup with butter, or half shortening and half butter. The butter adds it's own creamy flavor of course. The shortening gives a sturdier pastry.
I use a proportion of one cup mix with 2/3 cup milk, knead quickly, and bake for fifteen minutes at 450 degrees.
Try sprinkling the dough before baking with sharp cheddar for yummy cheese biscuits.

Just made a half dozen but added 1c sugar to your recipe. Mother is a sugarohaulic. My recipe is identical to yours. Lost my technique from not making the biscuits for a while. Added to much liquid and they spread more than they rose. Still a good flavor.
Had to use butter and am keeping it in the fridge in an air-tight container. Couldn't find the shortening, but after I had the mix made, turned around, and there is the shortening, hiding in plain sight.
