How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 400*F/200*C/gas5
  • Grease and flour a 2lb. loaf tin
  • Sieve all dry ingredients into a large bowl.
  • Add sugar.
  • Pour buttermilk into a jug, add egg, oil and treacle... blend well.
  • Add liquid to bowl and mix well with a large spoon.
  • Transfer to prepared tin.
  • Bake in preheated oven for approximately 45 minutes.
  • Cool in tin for 10 minutes and then transfer to cooling rack.
  • If a soft crust is preferred, cover loaf with clean cloth.
