How to make it

  • Grease 3 9-inch round baking pans.
  • Line with waxed paper.
  • Grease the paper and set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine cake mix, 1/2 cup flour and cinnamon.
  • Add water, pumpkin, oil, and eggs.
  • Beat well.
  • Transfer 1/3 of the batter to a small mixing bowl.
  • Beat in brown sugar and remaining flour.
  • Stir in chips and pecans.
  • Pour into 1 prepared pan.
  • Divide the plain batter between the 2 remaining pans.
  • Bake the 3 cakes at 350° for 20-30 minutes until cake test comes out done.
  • Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans and placing onto wire racks to cool completely.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cram shortening and confectioners' sugar.
  • Beat in the milk, vanilla and maple flavoring.
  • Place one plain cake on a serving platter.
  • Spread with frosting.
  • Top with the pumpkin-nut cake.
  • Frost.
  • Top with remaining cake.
  • Spread remaining frosting over top and sides of cake.
  • Serve.
